 |
|
After three months cussing what I thought were substandard speeds in the US I've relocated briefly to a deeper darker part of Devon where BT is the only internet option available.
The Beeb says BT says this
An independent broadband checker that I've just used says 3.77 mbps download speed, I've seen faster snails.
Anyone else noticing the dumbing down of bog standard package BT speeds? I'm sure my old Devon address (also non cable/satellite availability and also cheapo BT) was a damn site faster the last time this topic came up BCF! |

We have bt, its been cutting out completely for around a year and is slower than a week in the jail, after a stupid amount of phone calls they finally sent an engineer round.
He replaced the router and something else and told the mrs our internet had been cut down by nearly 50%

The phone line will be the limiting factor. Most routers can display the SNR (Signal to Noise Ration) aka Noise Margin. This needs to be above 9db really for reliable broadband. This is the difference in the actual broadband signal to the background noise on the line.
The other thing to look at is the Line Attenuation. This is the drop of signal strength from the exchange to your router. Anything higher than 55 is not good, 65 is the limit really. The lower the better.
There are a couple of things you can try to improve things a bit at your end, but no matter who you switch your ADSL based broadband to, you'll still be using the same limiting phone line.
Firstly, if you look at the faceplate in the post above, it has a male connector in the back of it. This plugs into the BT test socket. BT Openreach are responsible for the phone line only up until this point. If you have any internal phone extensions/wiring, this should be plugged into the faceplate itself (as in the wires in that photo). Removing the faceplate and putting the router straight into the test socket, removes all of your internal phone wiring around the house and can rule out if that is causing a problem. Try this and see if it makes a difference.
The faceplates can also be replaced with an NTE-5 filtered faceplate like these ones...
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=nte5+filtered+faceplate&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=41362155296&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16494972143005276961&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_2r9fk0du4m_e
They have a built in ADSL filter, so have 2 ports, one for ADSL and one for phone. They usually improve line quality and broadband speed by at least 10%, often more. Don't forget that you don't need your inline filter when you have one of these fitted. You plug the cables from the router/phone straight into the relevant socket on the faceplate.
Also, try this at your own risk, on older phone lines there are 2 wires for the "ring circuit" which can be removed as they are no longer needed. I can't remember which colour, so you may have to Google it. Disconnecting these 2 wires from the actual back of the BT socket can reduce noise on the line. These were originally for he old "ring ring" physical bell analogue phones. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Virgin are no better.
After many years of claiming that the majority of their infrastructure was 'high speed fibre', they are being more truthful in their latest ad campaign and finally admitting it was just plain old co-ax all the time.
Calling it 'DocSys3' doesn't actually help - I'm still sharing the bandwidth I am paying for with 30 odd other people in the road, and at peak times, I'm lucky to get 1Mb/sec.
Changing providers won't help in my case, as my street DP is actually spurred off another DP around the corner with copper, and everyone else uses it too.
You can get a rough idea what to expect from broadband, if your provider insists that you have to pay for a 'landline' as well, because that's what your bandwidth is going to be delivered on. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

With their ADSL broadband no, but through the cable network they are way quicker. 100Mbps is genuine download speed where I live.

Coax to the house is far better than 40 year old crusty copper phone line.

Are you sure your Virgin broadband isn't through the phone line? I know plenty of VM Cable broadband and we all get the speed advertised.

Ah, you realise that the Virgin cable TV and Broadband is not routed through copper phone lines at all, not even part way, don't you?

Cobblers. At no point will my Virgin Broadband be routed through the phone line. For a start, my Virgin phone line has nothing plugged into it. I only took it as it made my Large TV and XL Broadband cheaper, even including the line rental.
I suspect you're getting Virgin broadband through a phone (ADSL), mixed up with their fibre/cable service.
BT Infinity/Sky Fibre still uses old copper from the cabinet to the house, Virgin Media through a cable is completely different. I think they still offer standard ADSL broadband too though, for areas without cable laid to each house front. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Pft, where I am in Bedford, I'm getting between 1 and 1.5mps download. It's pitiful. There's nothing they can do until they put fibre in, and I'm on a new build. They're also building more houses, so it'll only get slower. Yay.
Been with BT, now with Talktalk as they're cheaper, but still just as slow. |
The OP is lucky!
I live in the centre of a city, and I'm currently getting 1.685mbps down, 0.604mbps up... and I'm in a new build!!!
When I moved in they said I would get 5mb, but it was more like 3mb and as people moved in it got slower and slower. It usually is 2mb on a good day.
It does make you very good at surfing the net.. I only watch you tube by opening new tabs, letting it buffer (I have a mod to let it buffer the full video) etc
Oh, and if I'm super desperate I tether to my 4G phone! Fast as fook. ____________________ Current: Kawasaki ZX636
