Just posting for a bit of advice.

I bought a CG125 E from gumtree and planned to ride it back home (about 200 miles).

I got about 30 miles when the chain snapped. It was just half of one link but it kicked off the sprocket. I had no tools so had RAC come out. The mechanic shortened the chain and moved the rear wheel in. Everything seemed fine.

About 40 miles later, it happened again, only this time it snapped in half and jammed up against the front sprocket. I also, to my horror, discovered the swing arm pivot bolt had lost its nut and vibrated halfway out the frame. (but that's not the issue).

After getting home via recovery vehicle, I took the flywheel cover off to free the chain and discovered that some of the casing had cracked off inside. Pics below. It looks like the flywheel chamber is still sealed so I'm hoping it's something I can ignore, but I thought I'd ask. Pics below:

There also appears to be some play on the front sprocket but I'm waiting on some tools to arrive before I can check that out properly.

That damage wont bother the bike. That piece of casting is there to stop oil being flung off the front of the chain.

So clean in there, I'd suggest the chain hasn't been oiled for years/since new.

If it were me, I'd glue a bit of bent metal plate to the remains of that casting to keep the lube where it's supposed to be and leave it at that.

Needless to say, check everything else.

Someone's been at the flywheel...

Thanks, I was hoping that was the case.

Unfortunately someone's been at everything. I'm hoping it's not going to turn out to be too expensive to sort out. I hadn't intended to buy a project but it looks like that's what's happened.

I could probably mount something to the cover that extends down. I'll give it a go when I replace the chain and sprockets.

I think the chain snapped due to fatigue initially. Then the second time it may have been a combination of that and overtightening - the tension seemed spot on but I think the RAC guy might have overtensioned it when he tightened the axle bolts.

Rac should never of shortened the chain IMO, my biggest concern will be if the shaft has been bent due to the chain stuffing itself into the casing, happened to me years ago on a fz600 had to have a new shaft put in.

If OP had crashed due the chain snapping the second time. Would The RAC man who shortened it and potentially overtightened it be liable?

Looks like the casing took all the shock. I don't think the CG has enough mass to bend that shaft, the FZ would have a fair bit more.

hollisharri - the sprocket is supposed to move about, don't worry about that. It should be greased on the shaft though. You do need a new chain though and buy a good one. As stinky said the casing is not broken anywhere important, you can just live with that or glue a patch over, you got lucky there.

Anyway, looking at that bike it seems that someone has stripped it, cleaned it, painted all the rusty bits and put it back together - carelessly. You can see where the swingarm pivot bolt has had the rust wire brushed off the head but not the sides. Do yourself a favour and go over every part of the bike, check all the fasteners and make sure that stuff is greased and oiled where it's supposed to be.

Thanks for the input chaps.

Bought myself a did chain and sprocket set to replace what's on the bike. Also investing in a Haynes manual and torque wrench and will make sure everything's tightened to spec.
