What's happened to Britain's biking population? I ride all year around on a zx7r and love it but why are so many people afraid? Their are a few guys I see on my commute on various machines but when it's sunny they all come out.
All I seem notice on sunny days is the race rep Rodney's who 's only throttle control is on and off with limited mechanical sympathy and the triumph themed bike lot.

What's gone so wrong with the biking world in the UK?

I was like you 10-15 years ago.

But a lot of us got older, got more responsibilities and less time and more money.

So 2003ish when it rained/snowed motorbike! Each time everytime... that's because all I had was a motorbike.

2015 I've got 2 cars and a motorbike. It rains I think meh and get into the car.

The licensing laws also killed off the younger riders from entering. As a full licence is a ball ache compared to when we did it.

The stupidly hard and costly route to obtaining the required licence for new/ young bikers.

TBH, I can't imagine that having sanctimonious 'old hands' grumbling about how the current generation are a shower of poofs for not wanting to risk hypothermia is helping much, either.

This sanctimonious old goat received a round of applause last night when he pulled into the area that usually holds Paignton Bike Night as he was the only one (bar the marshals) that bothered to turn up AND it had stopped raining at least an hour before.
There would have been two of us but my daughter on her 125 Zip is too embarrassed to take a ped to bike night, so she parked round the corner.

Seems it's not just the youngsters who don't like getting wet.

Bikes are for riding not polishing, I clean mine but it's not a show pony for the rivet counters. I have a car but it's so much nicer to ride than to be sat in a box that has no character and isolated from the real world. Modern kit is awesome days of hypothermia have gone unless you ride motorways in the winter and it gets cold but you get used to it.

I understand the licencing rules being strong but then most of us know other bikers who have jumped on a ICBM (inter county ballistic missile) and come off some worse than others and some dead.

Cars are safe boring and predictable. The fun is in riding a machine all year, enjoying the turns in the seasons and learning to ride smooth.

Agreed.

Yes, but at no point is it written anywhere that people are compelled to.

So tell me, of the bikes you list in your sig (two of which bear the caveat 'being worked on', and the other is ostensibly a race machine), which is the one that you rode all year round?

Haven't you seen me? I ride a Fazer 1000, on which I have covered 6000 miles since 21st June when I first rode this particular one. I haven't seen you though. Where have you been?

I've been riding since 1985, except for a few short periods when I couldn't afford my own wheels. I haven't seen you in all that time. Where have you been?

Is it just a case of poor obs? Thinking

My car has plenty of character ta and doesn't bore me at all. I quite like being safe and don't see that as a bad thing. And I can't remember the last time my bike did something unpredictable like make me a cup of tea of throw me a surprise party.

What's your point? Other than perhaps hinting that you need to get a better car?

A few days rain does wonder for clearing the roads - of fair-weather bikers and Rossi wannabes.

6000 miles in 8 weeks. Bloody hell! How many sets of tyres do you burn a year?

Whatever. You clearly have 1000000% more fun in a year than I do Very Happy

I didn't pass my car test until I was 39 in 2008, but have had a company car since then. I got rid of my winter hack (VFR750) as I no longer needed it.

My commute is only 4 miles, so it's pointless unchaining the bike, getting it out of the garage and putting my gear on for a short ride, especially if it's going to get ruined by salt in winter. It's easier to use the 320d or cycle and keep the bike for touring and weekend fun Thumbs Up

There are about as many regular horse riders as there are bikers in Britain. Not a good state of affairs. This figure is pretty small for our population when compared to Europe.

I've never done any research into the motorcycle market, but the equestrian market is worth £4bn

However while the number of regularly equestrian riders has fallen over the years, they are on the whole getting younger.

It's a shame the motorcycle industry doesn't have the same 74% female bias.

I ride all year and let the missus use the car. If/when we get more prosperous, we may buy another car a bit more "practical" than a Gen7 Celica, the back seats are for show.

Let's be honest riding to work when it's raining sideways isn't fun. I will continue to ride through all weathers while it still saves me time to get to work.

If riding a bike made no difference to my arrival time I'd use a car through the worst of the weather too.

If I'm on a rideout or going on a bike trip, the rain won't stop me in that instance.

If you're already out and it starts pissing down, fair enough.
If it's a extensively planned bike trip with others, fair enough.
Any other instance, rain stops play.
As someone on here advised when I asked for a response to give to the dick-heads at work when they call me a fair-weather biker, I can afford 2 modes of transport and can choose whether to keep dry or not.

My bike has Triumph on it, as do my gloves and I have breakdown cover, what is it you think I'm afraid of?

Some people only ride in summer and love it.

If they loved riding in winter then they probably would.

Tastes vary.

Exactly my philosophy. Why go out on the bike if you know it's going to piss down, given the option of a car and staying dry? What is the pleasure in going out on the bike in pissing rain?

But if I've committed to a ride where others are involved, I'm not going to mess them about by suddenly not turning up, unless we have all agreed that rain stops play.

I think I would have to describe myself as a fair weather rider these days (despite a thorough soaking on the way home from Wales the other day Rolling Eyes), although that never used to be the case. But when I'm in a position of being able to afford either a car or a bike, not both, the bike will win every time. Just fortunate enough to be able to afford both at the moment. And fortunate that I don't have a commute to do every day too. This may all change in the future though. If a bike is all I've got, and I have to commute, so be it, but I wouldn't choose it when a 'better' option is available.

I don't think the OP has really given much thought to the fact that everybody's circumstances are different, and indeed, can change, before he posted this question.

My bikes just a toy to me, only do about 3000 a year. I don't live in Laaaandan so getting around by car is easy. If I got a new job that required commuting through town or something I'd get a commuter bike straight away, I'm far too impatient for traffic, that's why I got into bikes in the first place.

Or like me he could be commuting around motorways every day. M40/M25/A1M, my journeys about 35 mile per direction. 700 mile a week in commute alone ignoring couple of hours most Sundays for leisure riding. 6000 mile in a couple of months, and by the look of the pics you post you have a lot more fun than I do! No commutes, just riding for pleasure - another philosophy of mine: do it while you can! Very Happy

Thought you were from the North Wet? Laughing

I alter my route to avoid certain sections of motorway in the sideways rain but still around a 40 mile round trip to work and back.

The bike's a bit tatty close up but can be polished up nice and shiny if I find the time. Hope to add another 55k to it (get it back to 000000) before I wear it out and get something else Smile

I live in Yorkshire now so I've got a bit softer. I'm still using the bike every day. 60 miles a day. I'm on 46 k now does that mean I'm finally starting to beat you? Razz

My bike is a total heap, I will ride it til the wheels fall off.
