Well, the title says it all. Due to unforeseen circumstances (bitch!) I have to move into my brother's terraced property. So, if I want to remain mobile on two wheels, my only real options are to leave my bike on the roadside most of the time (I can remove the handlebars and take it in the house during winter) or get a small scooter (vomit) and drag it through the front door every day. It's got to be one of the two, as I need transport on most days for work, except during the winter when I can get a lift.

My bro lives around the corner from the cop shop and have a council CCTV camera, so I'm not concerned about anyone stealing my bike. But we have a lot of rowdy people of a certain nationality who like to get drunk and knock things over\vandalise property as they got about their daily business.

There is nothing for me to lock my bike up to in the street so all I can do is place a lockable cover over the bike and hope people leave it alone. What do you reckon?

And they've allowed you to view sample CCTV footage to ensure that the quality of the camera is to satisfaction? If not then have you ever watched an episode of crimewatch?

"Have you seen this man?" No. I've never seen a human made out of one pixel before.

I assume you haven't seen the RJ thread?

(disastrous idea)

No lampposts that you can park near and put a long enough chain through?

No drain covers that you can put a chain through and leave there? (inb4 half asleep and keys fell down drain, ffs)

If no, then at the worst I'd be putting the steering lock on and chain the bike to make it as hard to wheel away as possible. I'd park the bike with the steering lock on facing the kerb so that they have no other choice but to lift the bike in an attempt to move it.

Remove battery each night?

Remove spark plug?

Unplug and replug a wire each night / morning?

Buy an alarm?

Rent a garage or parking nearby? (gumtree)

Install a ground anchor into the wall of the house and park it on the path?

F the council and install a ground anchor on the road?

As above, plus buy a self-adhesive sticker of the national flag of the alleged offending country, and display it in a prominent position on the bike.

I have no option but to leave my bike on the road. I'm on an ex council estate (you know, one of those ones where everyone knows everyone) I tend to lock her to my Van (or car when I have one) overnight and only use the 4 wheeler during the day/evening, if I am going away for a bit the bike either comes in the van or goes to a friends place

I've only had problems once, where I came out in the morning and found the bike on its side, whether its the result of someone fucking with it or wind I don't know...

I'm not interested in threesomes. At least, not when it involves another bloke. Thumbs Down

The local plod would be too bone idle to do anything about it anyway, but it must be a small deterrent if nothing else (one would think.)

Can't lock the bike to any lamppost or signpost as it will obstruct the pavement. Locking it to a drain cover is a good idea but I'd never get a regular parking spot on one.

I'm not worried about anti-thief measures as such (though it will certainly be alarmed\padlocked) as my bro's street regularly has cop cars passing and nosey neighbours keeping an eye on things. I'm more concerned about idiots shoving it over for a laugh and then legging it. It's not exactly my pride and joy, but I don't want to get up for work and have to deal with a cracked engine casing and an oil leak at 5 O' clock in the morning.

Then the English will trash it. Maybe I should get an EU flag and everyone will be happy. Smile

Not too much damage I hope? Also, do you find your bike is rusting prematurely from being left out all the time?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I suppose I'm just going to have to do it anyway. If anyone fucks with it I will just sell my bike and get a couple of old shitters to run about on that I won't worry about. Or maybe it would be safer to use the free MC parking in town (only a 5 min walk away.)

BTW, this is where I'm moving to. Very Happy

three of my bikes live in the street, one thing I've started doing is cable tying my covers onto the bikes, underneath joining the eyelets together, and too the bike if possible, as well as bungying them down. Just slows scrotes down ever so slightly more.

It's not that expensive, cable ties are cheap, a slight fiddle every morning cutting the cable tie(s) with a pocket knife, but doesn't slow me down overly. I make sure the locks can't touch the ground, (hitting with a hammer).

Started doing this, as less than 4 hours after I'd bought my CBX750F someone had nicked the cover. I assumed they'd come back later and have a go at the bike..... Evil or Very Mad

Used to leave mine on the roadside outside my house, even once left the keys in ignition and went out for 2 hours, was still there on my return. countryside living and a really nice area.

then after a few years some gypos chucked it into the back of a van and it was gone.

Sold house and bought one with a garage. job done.

Too narrow, or too tight a turn?

I can get ickle bikes down the side, but turn was too tight, so put a 5ft wide gate in, swings open and self latched to exterior wall of house. Don't put them there unless sorn normally though.

That's where i was going.

If it can't fit round the turn and the alley way has a metal gate on it (pretty common afaik) then chuck it in the alley with a chunky chain and fit a ground anchor.

Not been to Boston for years but when I was last there it wasn't the best of areas. Had a look into those alarmed disk locks?

https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/140224

Of course ideally find something secure to chain it up to. Better yet, if there is a police station 'around the corner' try and find somewhere opposite that to park? I guess people are less likely to be getting pissed up outside Boston Plod Shop?

Definitely too narrow. It's bad enough trying to get a push bike down there.

I used to live on the outskirts but barely ventured into town itself since the place has become so bad.

Heh. We have a street drinking ban but there are still drunks sat swigging lager on the wall of the police station car park. But I suppose I'll have to take my chances and not cry if I get a few dents\scratches\slashed tyres\urine marks. Sick

Does anyone know if I would get a ticket if I locked my bike up here either to the cycle rack or to a lamppost\bollard (obviously not on the double yellows)? I do see the odd scooter parked here now and then.

Sorry M8 you really don't need a bike under those living circumstances. It looks like you wont be having one for very long anyway with all the thieving bastards about these days.

Buy a good bike cover, and put a chain lock through the cover.

If they can't see it they won't be interested in it.

The lock will stop the cover being blown away, or stolen as I think once of mine was years ago.

I wouldn't be worried about getting a ticket on the bike parking bit - most definitely not a legal perspective, I just wouldn't think it would be likely, YMMV - to be honest though, a ticket wouldn't be my worst fear there. From the google maps point of view it looks like a bit of a secluded spot (or would be at night) so might be a bit of an opportunity for someone to nick it without too much issue. Just my opinion though, I don't know the place!

Could you not daisy chain 2 of them?

I need transport of some description for work, but I only have provisional licence and can't afford a car. I really can't be bothered cycling a 10 mile round trip after doing a 12 hour shift. So, if it comes down to it, I'll have to get a small scooter or even a monkey bike or something and keep it in the house. But I LOVE motorcycling and really don't want to give it up. Even if I'm pottering about on a chinky mobile or a rusted up CG, I'd be content!

hesta wrote:

It looks secluded but the police station is only a few metres away. Also there is CCTV. There is free MC parking in town but nothing to anchor my bike to.

mattyfattyboomboom wrote:

Doing so would obstruct the pavement, especially for pushchairs and mobility scooters.

It stinks to be a biker these days. Thumbs Down

Could you talk to the cops to see if you could park it in the cop shop some how?
