Hi, I recently rescued this bike from a breakers. I stripped it and have rebuilt her. When fired up she runs at about 5k and is very reluctant to settle down, when it does tickover it starts to climb again. I did not strip the carbs except for removing the tops and bowls and gave them a clean out with carb cleaner. The cables are not snagging, it returns to the stop freely. I have heard rumours that gt's are known for this. Neutral

Sounds like an air leak.

check the airbox/manifolds

if it has not been started regular known for it the one i have got does it. start it up when the revs go up turn it off do it 4/5 times then it should settle then.

Classic older GT550
check compression
Then if good It is dirty /worn out carbs
Could be a holed diafhram GT well know for this
The throttle spindle wears out the carb bodies causing and air leak this is why I broke several GT550 carb in good nick almost un available
