Hey guys,

So my 16th birthday is coming up soon and i want to ride a bike.

i was looking at Aprillia rs50' i heard they where the best 'Bike' looking moped' for teens my age.

i will only have the bike for around a year until im 17 and sell it on and buy a 125cc + a Car :p

do you guys recommend a 50cc bike for me?

Now that is a different question from the one you first asked!

I quite like the RS50's.
Yamaha SS50's are much better, personally speaking, but tricky to find nowadays and I'm not sure what the legislation has to say about 16year olds riding them. It all boils down to what you like the look of (and how much you want to spend)

Just try to avoid cheap Chinese bikes, unless you like buying new and selling for peanuts a year later (not to mention spending the first six months troubleshooting if you are unlucky)

To be honest I would not waste my time on a geared 50cc bike. I would wait until you are 17 before getting a geared bike. A 50cc with gears just means you will be changing gears constantly and it is a lot of effort for little reward.

You'll also struggle to find a motorcycle school that will teach gears on a 50cc. It is not cost effective and you will d the CBT on a ped and will be left to figure out gears by yourself.

The RS50 is top of the 50cc sporty game but if you find one that has not been ragged half to death by a chav you will pay through the nose on what is nothing more than very expensive plastic with an engine strapped to it. You'll pay through the nose for insurance and if it is not kept in top condition you will lost a lot of money on resale. Since they are 2 stroke you'll spend a fortune on good quality oil and maintenance.

My advice, get a 50cc twist and go until you can afford a 125. Then, as it will be kept for at least 2 years before you can do A2 restricted licence you can get something you like. The YZF R125 seems to be a popular choice.

Seriously at 16 I'd just buy a moped with scuffed plastics but mechanically all good.

It won't look as "good" but it'll hurt your feelings a lot less when you drop it (and you probably will, most people do!)

That and a 50cc anything doesn't make you look cool, so there's little point in trying too hard.

Being able to get around without being dependant on others is what's really great and that can be done on a boggo 'ped.

I'd save the extra £££ you'll save by doing that instead of buying/insuring/maintaining/reselling a 50cc "bike" and put it towards a 125 in twelve months time, there are some brilliant 125's out there that are worth spending a bit more on. A 50cc "bike" isn't worth it IMO.

The 'priller is a tidy looking bike but expensive. If you have the security to not let it get nicked and if you keep it in superb condition it might do you well for a year's riding without losing too much value come sale or trade-in time, especially if you buy a 'nearly new' one that's suffered it's first big depreciation.

If you want a 50cc bike then get one. Don't let the crusties above tell you to get a 'ped - 'peds are for chavs and girls.

The RS50 is a good choice but may be hard to come by at a decent price in good condition. Also consider the Rieju, Derbi and Motohispania offerings. They're all good-looking equivalents. There are also some cool MX/trailie looking bikes out there with 2T 50cc engines.

None will be particularly fast but they'll all look better than a 'ped of any description. I can't think why anyone would want a 'ped, unless they're delivering pizza, and there will always be someone waiting to buy your geared bike when you're ready to step up to a 125cc in 12 months.

None of my friends would've been seen dead on a 'ped at 16 so I understand why anyone would still prefer a geared motorcycle instead.

Thing is you look a bit of a twat riding around at 29mph with a tiny engine screaming at eleventy zillion decibels regardless, gears or auto, bike or 'ped.

There's just no point in trying to look cool on a 50, and 12 months is such a short period that you might as well suffer a scooter for it until you can jump on a 125 (there are some great 125's.)

The independence and freedom of having your own transport is more than enough to see you getting laid for that whole year even on a moped so anything else is superfluous surely? Laughing

It's nothing more than a means to an end. When starting out at 16 years old the options are limited. You either buy a 49cc ped or a 49cc geared bike. The ped is 2 to a penny. You're talking as an adult with their head screwed on (cross-threaded, maybe, but on, nonetheless). Think again as a 16yr old. I might be in my 40s but I still remember how pathetically uncool mopeds and scooters were to me and all my friends. No "grown up" was going to persuade me to get a moped based on sound fiscal advice, and why should they?

Let's face it; buying a geared bike over a moped is not likely to be the worst decision a teenage lad is likely to make in the next few years and it hurts no one.

Opinions may vary. Last time I tried a 125 (DR125SM) I felt hugely frustrated by the experience of constantly seeking for a gear that would make it feel like it had some get up and go - there wasn't one, and it didn't. I shudder to think what a ~2.5hp 50cc bike would be like. Pale

On the other hand, my Burgman made really good use of its very limited power, but was indeed duller than a liberal's argument.

My suspicion is that a 45kph AM-license-legal moped is going to be boring and shit and a danger to its rider whether it's geared or twist-n-go.

Might be different with a 70cc kit, red powerband, derestricted flange grommits and that, 90mph on the back wheel legit bruv.

Actually, just do that. A used RS50 is likely to have been chavved to the gills anyway, it's unlikely you can avoid it.

Get a Honda Zoomer instead, the stripped-down aesthetic draws undeniable coolness from lunar rovers and the old Triumph Striples. There are actual full proper bikes out there who can't match the coolness of a Zoomer.

I'd say it was you thinking back to 'the good ol days' Wink
The reason there are so few geared 50's that look like motorcycles in production is because the yoof of the last decade (or two) actually thought it was cool to be ped bois (the Italians have been doing it for years, but there's no accounting for taste).
Very few 40 year olds would have rather tongued their granny at 16 than ride a ped but times change

Money isnt a problem at all, but i need a moped as my mum is a contractor and i have to get myself to school and back, also the gym.

Go for the Honda Zoomer, I've seen a few around in London and must say they look bloody good fun. If I was sixteen instead of forty-nine it's definitely what I would have.

The RS50 is a good go-to bike for something that looks the part and gets you used to operating gears.

Correct me if I'm wrong though, but weren't they and the RS125 hideously unreliable? Everyone I know who had one tells me it broke many times. As others have said, finding one in good condition that hasn't been ragged and won't fall to bits the minute you go anywhere, may be quite a challenge.

Although I can't really talk, the engine on my Suzuki moped seized...

You'll only have it a year tops before you'll want rid of it in favour of a 125. I'd probably be inclined to go Chinese...
