I may be wrong but as long as you don't do several fast consecutive clicks e.g. double clicks. it wont register as a fail.
I usually click a hazard 3 times. When I first see it, when I think the computer wants me to see it and one just after I think the computer wants me to see it.
Usually about a second and a half between each click.
The hazard perception test is flawed but once you know how it works it is rather easy to pass. Passing the test itself doesn't really have much to do with how perceptive you are.
I've passed the Car, Motorbike and HGV test so I have a fair bit of experience with this test . ____________________ Bikes: Previous Bikes: Piaggio x8 125: 2012/2013, YBR 125: 2013/2013 BMW R1150GS 2013/2017, Honda CBR600RR 2017/2017, Honda CB500 2018/2018, Suzuiki Address 110cc 2019/2020, BMW R1200GS 2021-2023

One tip I picked up while doing mine: their definition of a 'hazard' is 'something that would cause you to slow down or change direction', so if the biker in the video doesn't do that, that wasn't the hazard they wanted you to spot.

This.
But to add a little here, they specifically are looking at "developing" hazards. Just because it does not look like you will need to change speed/direction when you first see the cyclist, it does not mean that the situation will not change. Be ready to click until you are fully past anything that looks like a potential hazard.

I don't think it's possible to click too early: the timer for the hazards they care about starts as soon as anything at all is visible. (They arrange the clips so they work like that.) But, the 'don't click in a pattern' bit is just to stop people going clicky-clicky-clicky and trying to pass by fluke; as long as you're not taking the piss, it won't matter if you click too much. |
Not quite and it is indeed possible to click too early. Some of the training DVDs and apps explain when the scoring zones start and why. It goes back to that word "developing" again. All of the elements that contribute to the hazard may be visible so on the screen but scoring will not start until whoever makes the clips thinks that you should notice something.
You may think that tractor at the side road is likely to pull out on you but you will not score anything until it actually shows some intention of doing so. A narrow, humped back bridge is a hazard. But it is not a developing hazard until something is coming the other way and you score nothing for assuming something might do so, even if it does seconds later.
My advice, click if something looks like a hazard but click again if something changes. It's not perfect but there is a good chance you will pick up a few points if the first click was too early. Taking the piss may set off the anti cheating algorithm but I have yet to do so using this tactic, either in practice or doing the real thing. |

That's exactly the opposite of what happened in all the sample clips and training tests that I did that showed the scores afterwards.
Pretty much every time I clicked before the scoring zone began. That might not be representative of the DVSA exam, but what else do we have to go on?
The expectation seems to be that you need to click in some magical sweet spot just before you'd have to actually anchor on or swerve.
Utter tosh, but it's just a game, don't sweat it. Click, "bollocks", click "bollocks-and-a-half," click, win. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

As others has stated, the score line opens once whoever made the clip wants you to see the hazard that is going to cause you to slow down and/or change direction.
As aceslock said there is around 14 clips which one clip has 2 hazards so just be wary of that.
They explain this before you start the test and if I remember correctly they show you are practice one before you actually start (I may be wrong but pretty sure they did when I did mine).
Don't stress too much it was pretty easy and the first time I did mine I scored 66/77 |
