Why put your foot down ????

I was coming back from Yorkshire the other day , on the A1 and I see a biker put his foot down on the road going round the round about. ( Bedford )
And when he come off the round about going round the bend he put his foot down again..

Why ?...

I have seen some young scooter riders do it but never seen it done on a big bike..
Is it a feel safe thing ?, I have never done that myself..
Also what if there is something on the road , it might take him off.

I just wondered why , if there was any body on here that does it can enlighten why...

To prevent understeering I think I don't personally do it I have never felt the need and don't see the point unless you're on a SM.

I think it's down to a lack of confidence in being able to balance the bike. Bloody dangerous really since if your foot contacts the road at 20mph it'll fell like someone's wallopped it with a baseball bat.

Because a large part of riding a motorbike is faith and belief that the machine is capable of such things.

The unfaithful doubt either their own or their machine's ability and therefore don't commit whole heartedly.

When in reality most bikes have limits WAYY above the level of the rider. Even humble machines like GPz500s can absolutely fly.

It's a push bike thing too....a lot of youngsters that go from a push bike to a powered bike do it. Also, those that have come off on a bend in the wet recently do it. 'Does look a bit daft

You're usually a lot higher up on a push bike, affecting the centre of gravity, plus you have a much smaller trye footprint and there's a lot less weight to keep that stuck to the road........ which is why a lot of cyclists put their foot down while turning on loose surfaces - a habit some find hard to stop when moving up to a motorcycle. With the wider tyre, more weight and a lower centre of gravity on a motorbike, you can rely more on the bike not slipping or folding over. I worked with a local charity a while back, teaching young reprebates to ride motorbikes...... and getting the kids to stop putting their feet down on corners was a real challenge.

I occasionally get really bad hip cramp and have to straighten my leg to get rid of it, never been bad enough that I've had to do it going round a roundabout though.

I stretch my legs on long trips as well but I don't do it going round round abouts , I thought I would go and see my mum and give my bike a good run.

No it was not a dirt bike chap , I did not really pay to much attention to what model bike it was but I can tell you it looked new and he had a head cam on his helmet... Oh and he had a high visz vest on as well...

21 pound each way , much cheaper than going in the car..

Taking your feet off the pegs is unsafe cos it raises the bike's centre of gravity. If you hit a bump while your feet are off the pegs you will wobble and weave much more and possibly lose control. The Polis and trials riders always keep their feet firmly on the pegs in slow manoeuvres.

Here, when you put your foot down, you signalize a hazard on the road for the rider that's behind you. Potholes, sand, gravel..., if you put your left foot down the hazard is on the left and vice versa. But that wouldn't be this case. So, if you see a continental going straight with his foot down, you know he's not mental, he's just trying to help you.

It makes only sense to me when riding on slippery surface with very slow speeds. When your foot is already down you are ready to support/correct the bike if it slides.

Or in high speed if he is experienced dirt/flat track ride which I somehow doubt.
