After being away from the UK for the past four years and pretty much off bikes I have returned and done what I said I would not do again and bought a motorbike. Its a BMW K1100 and needs a fair amount of TLC to get back up to its former glory.
I've bought all the bits I need, Plugs, Oil, Filters, Pads and have all the tools but I'm now living in Soho and its pretty much impossible to work on in the street without being hassled by drug addicts begging for change or being rained on everytime I bring the tools down.
Just wondering if any kind BCF people in London might have access to a garage or closed area where I could work on it for a weekend? I would be happy to make a contribution ____________________ CBR1100xx - BMW K1100 - BMW K100 - Triumph Sprint ST 955i - Suzuki GSX-R 600 - Suzuki DR 350 - Yamaha XV 750 - Honda CBR 600 FM - Yamaha XT 600 - Yamaha Rs 200 - Honda NSR 125 |

I'm also trying to fix up a tatty K1100 in the gutter, in Brixton, so plenty of addicts and people wanting to nick my tools if I go indoors for a minute. Maybe we should start a club. Why are you better off paying substantially more for some disinterested spanner monkey to do a half arsed job?
It's a brilliant idea and I'd be surprised if they're turning much if any profit at those prices in Lahndahn. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Looks like a really nice facility, but its certainly not cheap! I actually have a mechanic who charges 40 an hour and is usually pretty fast though in this case I have to lube the clutch output shaft which is a 4-6 hour job. ____________________ CBR1100xx - BMW K1100 - BMW K100 - Triumph Sprint ST 955i - Suzuki GSX-R 600 - Suzuki DR 350 - Yamaha XV 750 - Honda CBR 600 FM - Yamaha XT 600 - Yamaha Rs 200 - Honda NSR 125 |

I've used Oval a few times. Mostly as I'm a mechanical Noob so it's good to have someone who knows that they're talking about to help. Matt (the mechanic there) knows what he's on about and is willing to help out when things get tricky. I guess it depends on your experience though, sounds like you know a fair bit more than me so would only really be using the bench, rather than Matt's knowledge. Just my
They do some offers so you can get bulk discount when buying your hours, not sure how much cheaper it makes it but worth looking (apologies if it's obvious on the site).
Can't think of anything else in London that offers a similar thing unless a kind BCF'er can help? ____________________

This is a damn good offer, I'd happily pay those prices, most jobs take under an hour, like a service. Plus you get all the sundries/tools needed. Not bad, link saved. ____________________ Current bike - GSX-R1000 k8 |

I should be able to pick the key up if anybody wants to use that East London workshop (somewhere in E17, about 10 mins off the North Circ) - and there are plenty of shops around there, even a Tesco metro.
I think he only wants his rent covered (about 40 quid a day, I think), but it's all very ad hoc at the moment, as he is in the process of setting up as a ?workshop himself, so it's fairly empty, spacious; looks like it's been used for car repairs in the past, too.
He might be amenable to storing a bike there temporarily, might have to enquire further on that front about storage costs, say if you didn't finish fixing it and had to come back; its prolly gonna be cheaper to store it than £40 a day, obvs. It certainly seems secure.
So if a few of you wanted to club together it would be cheaper than just one of you paying him £40 for each day (or paying me and I can give him the money if he's not around) (your money is safe with me, mwahahahahahaha).
Although there is electric, I think it's a pound-in-the-meter sort of arrangement anyway.
If I picked up the key from him and let you in and locked up again later, I could bring tea, coffee, sugar, milk and a kettle, cups, etc. for you guys to make use of. Maybe bickies if I was feeling nice, LOL.
As there is a communal loo (other lock-ups in the vicinity), I am presuming there is running water somewhere on the premises!
Anybody interested, let me know by PM, I'll talk to him a bit more. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

I've used OMC a few times too. Certainly gets my thumbs up.
As a mech noob, many jobs (obviously) took longer than they would down some other garage, as Matt walked me through exactly what needed to be done, double checked I did things correctly and took over for the particularly hard bits. So price wise, it didn't really work much cheaper than an average garage.
However, I learnt a lot, I knew the work was being done well to a high standard and I purchased the parts at competitive prices. Next time, I'll have a much better idea of what I'm doing, so will be able to get on with it quicker too. If you know what you're doing, you'll be able to just do the job and go.
It's a great place, a good vibe there, good mix of total newbies and experienced folk. No worries about working outside in the wet, not having the right tools or not quite sure if something is right. ____________________ Beginner Biker Adventures Blog

I'm not ashamed to admit that I've always liked K1100s, especially the LT. Most of my riding is in London and I find it very satisfying zipping around in a big old armchair. If I had something lighter and faster I'd only get into trouble. And I like the build quality, it's more like an aircraft than a bike. I reckon if I can get on top of the maintenance the bike will last as long as I do. I'm learning the maintenance from scratch, using Clymer and the internet, and it's slow going. Finally got my front brake sorted today - had to rebuild the master cylinder, and I'd never even bled a brake before. It feels really sharp now, makes me want to try a stoppie. But I daren't because someone knocked the bike over (again) the other night. Some of the people who park in my street are high. They smash into loads of things when they're parking, and they don't even notice. So now I have loose fairing panels and a bust indicator. And my brake lights have packed up. And the clock goes back to zero when you start the engine. Plenty to keep me busy. But I've just got permission to park in a private, gated street, so at least the bike is now safe from the hopheads. ____________________ Current bike: K1100RS. That sounds pretty awesome to me, I would be down to do it if anyone else wanted to? I actually have quite a few tools I can bring and experience if anyone needs help.
I actually have a friend who said I could use his garage on Saturday but would still be up for doing the garage thing if others got involved.
Some of the things I will be doing
Replace backlights in instruments
Repaint fairings
Replace fork seals
Replace Engine, transmission, fork and final drive oil
Replace spark plugs
Retap and possibly helicoil downpipe bolts threads (Some are stripped)
Replace some of the dash switches
Relube windscreen motor cables
Replace starter bushings
Relube driveshaft and clutch output splines (involved dropping gearbox) ____________________ CBR1100xx - BMW K1100 - BMW K100 - Triumph Sprint ST 955i - Suzuki GSX-R 600 - Suzuki DR 350 - Yamaha XV 750 - Honda CBR 600 FM - Yamaha XT 600 - Yamaha Rs 200 - Honda NSR 125 |

A Tatty K1100? No garage? What are the chances! From your previous bike history it looks like you have become a bit of a boring old sod like myself
When I was in Australia there was such a thing as rent-able workshops which you could rent by the hour, it was reasonably cheap, I believe roughly 10 quid an hour. The fee would provide you with access to a range of tools, the site itself as well as an on site advisor/technician, presumably an ex mechanic. There was roughly 10 units on site and the supervisor would walk around giving people advice on their repairs and occasionally helping the most useless, often myself.
I always thought it was a great idea, never heard of a similar thing here in the UK. |
Back in the 80s, there was a UK chain of rent a ramp garages for cars - can't remember what they were called, Polarbear might be able to help, there was one in Milton Keynes.
Anyway, they lasted a few years, some branches longer than others, but they sank without trace in the end, the running costs outweighed the income, so there's not much chance for the relative minority sport of bikers to make a go of it
At £24 ph, that bike place seems like a steal; at your estimate of a 6 hour job, it would cost you twice that to buy a new bike ramp (which you ideally need to do a spline lube on a K) never mind enclosed, weatherproof and comfortable surroundings, plus all the tools and advice you need.
I would spend a few hours watching Chris Harris videos on youtube, then book yourself in. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

HK, look's good to me if a couple of other BCF'ers could make use of the gaff together! I might even do a service on my tank/bike! Not sure about storage, but as a day use, it seems pretty ideal. |

Another +1 for Oval. Go there, do a basic service. An oil / filter change (they provide the oil), pads, chain adjust, air filter in an hour. Adjust everything, can also lube the bike up and properly inspect it.
I like to spend a little more time as don't like to be rushed and more importantly, to do a good job. I'd prefer to do it myself than a backstreet garage which won't even change the oil.
It's also quicker than taking it to a garage.
And for anything major, there's a mechanic on hand who can help out. ____________________ FZR400 (blown engine), ZXR750 (blown engine), ZX6R (accident), CBR600 which had engine issues after which I learned to change gear..., CBR900, CBR924 (stolen), CB600, CB1300 (everything blew up), BMW K1300GT (written off, hit from rear while stationary), Bandit 1250 for a couple of months, Triumph Sprint ST 1050 (nicked) and somewhere in there, I wrote off a Ducati 748 at Cadwell. |

Amazing how things can change in a day, with a couple of conversations and a roughing out on the back of a fag packet (not really, as I don't smoke)
Website's a bit rough and ready, as is the workshop space, till I get it up and running properly for him (if I can manage to do so) - upshot is that it's a tenner an hour, other rates are being considered, don't hold the website to ransom, it could change by the day at the moment
