Hi folks, new wannabe biker here.
I'm yet to do CBT but was advised to do theory first.

I've arranged to sit my theory test on weds. As I'm 39, I didn't have to sit this way back when I sat my car test.

I understand it's in two parts. Multiple choice and hazard perception.

I'm looking for good resources (books, websites, apps) to help me prep for the test.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

Thanks,
Don.

Who said and why?

How do you even know biking is for you if you've not even done your CBT?

Confused

I've been wanting to do this for some time. I've bought a brand new R3 and all the gear, so I'm quite committed.

The lady at the bike school suggested I pass theory first as I'm looking to cram in CBT and the DAS within a week or two.

Hi Don,
You dont need to do a theory first, its not a requirement.
You only need to do a CBT, up until the point that you decide to do your full test.
At that point, you will need the theory test.

I used an app on my phone, that had all the test questions and would sit you a mock test.

You can buy books and cd rom type things from Amazon.

Good luck Smile Thumbs Up

As a nearly 40yr old, I guarantee you'll find the theory test the hardest part of the whole getting-on-a-bike thing.

Use the available apps, the CD roms (that are often cheap in supermarkets) and online help available but be prepared for the fact that the Hazard Perception test is actually a load of old bollocks.

Don't bother predicting hazards as you do when driving every day. You're really only looking for ones that are spoon-fed to you then click as you see it, click again as it develops and once more for luck. Don't click metronomically at the screen and don't rapidly flick away at the button (despite what your wife may prefer) because both of those will fail you.

The reason you've been advised to get it out of the way first is because it's the easiest one to fail so you might need time for another go.

Thanks for quick replies everyone. I understand why she suggested theory test first as I want to get through the other parts quickly.

The app store is a minefield when it comes to apps. Really just keen to know if anyone could recommend a specific one.

Is the DSA book on passing theory test a worthwhile read?

As for the bike itself, it's a brand new stock R3 in blue. I got this plus all the gear on a pcp for £119 per month. Bike shop will trade it back in whenever I feel confident going up to a 600. Didn't feel comfortable going straight into a 600 as I'm well aware I'll be a novice for some time.

I searched for Motorcycle hazard perception on Youtube, they may not be the official ones but all you need is a feel of what sort of situations will arise, and learn when to click (i.e. when is too early, when is too late, and don't over-click). The official DVDs are all well and good, but you will no doubt get loads of scenarios in the test that weren't exactly the same as on the official DVD anyway.

General rule of thumb; spot something that will make you change direction or brake, or both. Click...wait a second then click again in case you were premature the first time. Annoying thing is that there's no exact science to when they think a hazard is a hazard. For example, A lorry coming the opposite way wants to turn across your path without looking. Is it a hazard when it's approaching the junction, or only when it fails to slow down, or when it fails to stop on the giveway line, or is it only a hazard when it pulls out in front of you? That's the hard part, but 2 or 3 clicks between *possible start point* and *obvious hazard* should do the trick.

The highway code is a worthwhile book to read, that has everything in there.

Down to the local supermarket, pick up the DVD (if you have a computer with an optical drive) and practice, practice, practice.

It's not complete common sense, there are some nutty enviro-mental questions in there. The hazard 'perception' is an exercise in pretending that you haven't actually seen a hazard develop until it's almost too late to avoid it. All very frustrating, but it's not that hard and you only need to squeak through to get a pass.

Just be aware that on the hazard perception part one of the clips has 2 hazards.

I used this:

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/motorcycle-theory-test-hazard/id600089803?mt=8

I believe there is an Android version as well. It is pretty good in general but I do not recall it including anything on the case study, scenario based questions. Still, they are pretty much just a different way of wording the regular questions.

The hardest part is hazard perception test. You do not need to read any books. DVD will be all you need. Also avoid app store and all fancy phone apps.

All apps are useles - the reason is the actual hazard test is on old fashioned desktop PC and you need to master the test on a PC too, preferably with a mouse. The key here is to master mouse clicking timing. Which is more or less: you see hazard Click - count 2 secs - Click - count 1 sec - Click. Test done.

Hence this £10 test kit is all you will ever need:

What a load of crap. I did my A licence 2 months ago and found the apps very useful. In fact there wasn't a single question that popped up on my test that wasn't on the app. As for clicking, waiting a few then clicking again - more bollocks.

Click once when you see the hazard, click again when the hazard develops and you might need to take avoiding action, click one last time for good luck.

It's no wonder people get so confused about this test with people like you giving advice like this.

The app? Seriously? Are you suggesting there is single application in the app store?

I wonder where is your brilliant proof that the answers in amazon kit I suggested will not have all the questions?

And how your 3 clicks differ from my 3 clicks?

It is no wonder we have so high levels of iliteracy Rolling Eyes

And I am sorry if I offended any Apple or Android nerd. Download 200 apps from the apps store and use them all Middle Finger

To be fair though, apps such as the one I linked to can be comparable in their usefulness, are cheaper and do not require waiting for delivery. They also do not require a computer with an optical drive, which can no longer be taken for granted on recent models. Not to suggest that your recommendation is invalid but apps can be viable alternatives.

I used the android version. The only other thing of use was the advice to forget the years of early hazard spotting and to click way later.
It was good enough for me to pass first time Very Happy

Does seem like a good one.

For anyone using it or any other resource that omits the case study questions though, watch out for those and consider seeking out some examples of them. You get a description of a ride/drive and have to answer 5 (iirc) questions about it. For example, one of the lines might say that you went up a steep hill and the question might ask which sign you might have seen. Still multiple choice but they do take a little more thought. Not all that hard but might be enough to trip you up if you are otherwise headed for just scraping a pass.
