Why did they have to dress it up as political surely they (protesters) would get more support if they said they just fancied chucking shit at Hipsters because they're Hipsters. Its enough of a reason for me.

I suspect the working, employed hipsters were singled out by the unemployed anti posh, for being priveledged posh people who have jobs, where the anti posh have to work hard attending job club once a fortnight, for their state provided dole/hash money. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

So it's OK to be forced out of your home by rising rents? That's what gentrification means for a lot of Londoners. ____________________ Current bike: K1100RS. Point being is that when so-called "funsie" type of people move into a place, that is invariably what gentrifies it because they actually want to make the area nice to live in.
It's not about paying to live in a shit area cos its "fun", believe me, I've paid and lived in some TRULY SHIT AREAS (including the arse end of Shoreditch, long before it was trendy to do so). It's about paying what you can afford to live in a shit area cos you can't afford the posh ones. And if that means having a bit left over to buy decent grub and artworks, then why the hell should we diss the people who provide them, regardless of how they behave?
Gentrification *is* an improvement, because it means you can get PROPER coffee, flowers, decent meat again, instead of shite cheap brand bullshit sausage meat mostly made with bread and newspaper, or have to live where there are never any trees, plants or attractive artwork to cheer up your life, instead just grey dull facades and filthy windows where the only wildlife is the occasional butterfly attracted to the buddleia that in a city environment merely looks like a weed.
City living shouldn't have to be mean, miserable and grey: it's bad enough that we have to share cities with people whose flats smell of Jeyes Fluid, or who only know how to cook things that smell of old Chinamen's underpants : people who provide colour and vibrancy through art, and shops selling funky products - regardless of what they are, or the price someone is silly enough to pay for them - should be encouraged, because it brings the horror of oversubscribed "multiculturalism" back to a level where it's worth stepping out of your front door when you can see things that make you happy or that bring a smile. It reminds us that multiculturalism is also actually about a culture we might like to be interested in.
People might be silly enough to pay a fiver for a bowl of cereal in Cereal Killers, but what of the people who are silly enough to pay £25 for a block of cheese because it comes from Paxton & Whitfield in St James? Nobody disses the people living and providing art, colour and expensive shops in St James, do they. Noooooo, because it's rich silly people with more money than sense that buy there and who have gentrified there years ago, so that the area has a sheen of respectability due to the multi-millions invested in it, and that the products in its shop are considered "luxury items" by the rest of the world. Even Mr Fortnum and Mr Mason had to start somewhere, and I'm sure that poor people probably thought they were cheap and nasty purveyors of posh tat when they started, too.
So why should the less-well-off amongst us who have more money than sense not be entitled to do the same thing in an area when someone is mad enough to open a shop and sell it? To spend our money on funky weirdnesses purveyed by strange men in unusually shaped beards and with peculiar lilts: it's got to be better than spending it on black-out curtains and porridge.
The guy who owns the cereal shop is actually from thickly accented Irish stock and probably came over here to get away from the tedium of growing potatoes behind his ears, bless him. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life.

Not really.
If moving to somewhere you can afford means moving to somewhere you can't get a job, then what is the point of moving at all?
I moved to a beautiful area of Kent last year, and I greatly regret that I had to move out again. But shit happens, you make the best of what you get.
Regardless of how much nicer the scenery is, the expense of losing a decent income and then having to do the bedroom tax whinge (as Rogerborg clarifies it so succinctly ) cos one has to have the rent paid by the local authority, who then tell us how many rooms we can afford to have.
Oh, great, let's all move somewhere else where our chains are double-padlocked with someone else's key, instead of just our employers'.
Despite the fact that there are quite a lot of other places I would like to live, it's not so bad living in London in the meantime - it's only people who don't/can't/never have [wanted to] live here who perceive it as some kind of over-indulgent entitledness. Nothing wrong with not wanting to live here, but please, don't lump us in with people who think the world owes them a living, cos most of us don't think like that.
We really don't expect more than anyone else.
We just get given it by those horrid people in power over whom we have no more control than you guys who don't live here, either ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Maybe they're grumbling that they don't live in Shoreditch anymore, they'd had to go and source their square sausage elsewhere in a new morass of dirt and grinding poverty.
Actually, I understand that Peckham and Tower Hamlets are already well on the way towards getting their own cereal shops, so where are the artists finding their garrets these days? God knows they couldn't move to the provinces, that'd be a fate worse than death. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

And besides which, the poor artistes have to share their home with wandering travellers ; this poor lady has to rent her garret out to make ends meet, no doubt all in the name of righteous bohemian behaviour. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |
