Given Volkswagen's engines arnt unusual and their NO2 figures are simerler to other manufacturers does that suggest Volkswagen is not the only one fiddling engine performance figures?

Hi

From reports so far, looks like they can pass the tests, just that doing so has various down sides (expensive running costs in additives, etc), so seems likely that others can also pass the tests but might not chose to fiddle things to appear better in other areas.

That said, I suspect others are pulling stunts. Whether others are so blatant , or even similar is another question.

For example, Alfa have their DNA setup where you can select a mode. Suspect this is mainly a fiddle to get through emissions tests, with the default mode being used for testing.

All the best

Audi, Seat and Skoda recently admitted they've got a few million cars with the cheat software, but that's not surprising really since they're sister companies and the engines are nearly identical.

Not going to happen to GM or Ford for some strange reason.

Actually I really don't care.

It is very simple, there are 7.5 billion people in the world. Considering 5 billion live in countries with no sewage treatment, I wouldn't worry too much about a bit of emissions from cars. The seas will die before the air.

Because emissions based VED.

Not yet, but the uncertainty is the problem.

Would you pay top dollah for one while suspecting that you might be hammered with high rate emissions VED?

The potential consequences are manifold. For a start, I (along with millions of others) am driving a car that (potentially) does not meet EU type approval, so is effectively not road-legal.

So what happens? VAG issue a recall? Apparently this is only required where an issue affects safety, so not in this case. VAG issue a voluntary service bulletin? What if I choose to ignore it? I like how my car goes, I don't want it getting slower and/or more thirsty. I am now knowingly driving a non road-legal car.

What if I roll over and let them update it? Who will compensate me for the extra fuel it will use? I am no ambulance-chaser but will not be happy at an enforced financial penalty through someone else's deliberate fraudulent activity.

And I haven't even touched on loss of resale value.

I am already planning what to spend my windfall on. Thinking

...and now it's officially a UK problem:

An industry publication wrote:
Volkswagen's UK unit said on Wednesday (30 September) it would recall 1,189,906 vehicles sold in the UK fitted with the two-litre EU5 diesel engine produced from 2009 with the software behind the emissions scandal. The tally includes diesel VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda models plus VW commercial vehicles.

The automaker will advise dealers of relevant VIN numbers within days and develop a process for owners to check for affected vehicles and start contacting owners.

VW stressed that all the vehicles are still safe and roadworthy, the BBC reported. It will present its plans for resolving the issue to regulators next month.

Affected vehicles:

Volkswagen cars 508,276
Audi 393,450
Seat 76,773
Skoda 131,569
VW commercial vehicles 79,838
Total 1,189,906

I shall be having an in-depth discussion with whomever contacts me, should it come to pass.

No. Diesel cars are tested for the volume/density of smoke produced, not its composition. This scandal mainly concerns Nox emissions.

I was surprised to learn just how stringent US emissions regulations are. Their threshold for nox emissions is 0.07 grams per mile which is almost half that of Euro 6 which is 0.13g/m

Then again, they probably do twice the miles we do.

The funy bit is going to be when all these irate people take their car in "To be fixed", get a re-map and find their car now runs like a total bagowank, guzzles fuel, overheats and the wears out prematurely.

The fail has only just begun. Just when the PPI companies thought they'd be left with an expensive autodialler system on their hands and no-one to sell it to. "Volkswagon, Seat, Renault. Audi, Skoda... Have YOU bought one of these cars in the last five years? Call us NOW, our team is standing by..." etc.

If I owned one of the VWs in question I'd be supergluing the cap on the ECU socket before taking it anywhere near a dealers for anything at all in case they decide to re-flash it without asking me. Mark my words, the ones that never came in for their recall will be the ones worth top-dollah.

I'm baffled as to what "fix" is being proposed.

They can't make them run cleaner on the road without dialling the boost right down and leaning them out to the point of self destruction. So yes, GTFO kthnxbye.

All they can really do is to disable the cheat-o-chip and have them run realistically dirty while on test. But to what end?

Presumably this is just stalling and declaring that Something Has Been Done, while they wait for the other marques to get dragged into it.

I will be asking some deep and detailed questions about what they propose to do and what the effects will be before anyone goes near my ECU with a computer.

Since NOx is a result of high combustion temperatures, the likely outcome is to potentially dial up the EGR % and let the DPF catch all the extra PM that will result. So possibly DPF life will shorten, and fuel consumption could increase both through cooler running and increased DPF regeneration. Let's not forget these are not stoichiometric engines, so "lean" isn't really a thing.

And thinking on my feet, if the EGR is more active and there is more PM, the oil could suffer, so will service intervals also shorten? The more I think about it, the more I need to think about it (and the harder time the service receptionist is going to get when they call me). It's a proper can of worms/Pandorra's box.
