 |
|
Hi everyone,
I am new to the forum and urgently need a camshaft for my Honda CB200 1977 model - obviously needs to be in good condition.
I recently bought the bike and unfortunately despite the low mileage the lack of maintenance means that the cam chain had not been adjusted so has knackered the camshaft along with other parts which I have managed to locate. The camshaft however is beyond repair and the only replacements used parts I can find are in the USA. I know it is a long shot but if you don't ask and all that.
Keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks for reading |

Are you sure the camshaft can't be resurfaced?
I'd ask here (for instance): https://www.hondatwins.net/index.php
There is a very high possibility the '77 CB200 camshaft is the same as in other models from that era. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

That is cheap. Mine actually looked better than that but when trying to rectify running problems we discovered broken piston rings, scored barrels, cam chain tensioner and the camshaft wrecked!!
Will post some photos when I have time to resize them. |

I did see that, luckily the part is unavailable so I was not tempted to order it. |

THE STORY SO FAR - hopefully in order and no omissions.
The engine has little mileage and bike has been dry stored for around 15 years with the last two owners with little or no use. The guy we bought it off had little mechanical knowledge. The bike started with the kick start but running was erratic and it was suggested the carbs needed setting up.
The fuel tank was our first concern with the amount of rust in it so hubby made a temporary tank out of a petrol can. The starter motor did not work and on checking was full of oil - cleaned it out, seals replaced and looked for the cause which seemed to be the breather pipe was wrongly routed and crushed. Starter motor now works fine. The engine did run when we got it but not well so we started by checking all the obvious - carbs, points, plugs, timing, tappets, oil drained and replaced etc. replacing with new parts as necessary including carb floats and full repair kits. I noticed a rattle so the cam chain was adjusted. The running did improve but we still had some smoke from the exhaust and from the breather pipe. There was an obvious difference in the temperature of the exhaust gasses from one side to the other. Compression checks showed it was low on the cool exhaust side (near/left side) but improved with a little oil in the barrel so "Off with it's Head". By this time we had decided that running it for a couple of months before the winter was not going to happen so the engine removed we found the off/right side piston was a replacement and the rings incorrectly placed with the gap lined up instead of staggered. The near/left side piston had two broken rings. The cam chain tensioner was damaged - photo above, the cam shaft ends and off/right side housing (speedo drive I believe) also damaged. Centrifugal oil filter fully sludged up with plenty of filings in the filter.
The head has been skimmed, valves re seated, barrels bored, new pistons and rings. Currently waiting on a decision on the cam shaft and a shed load of new and lightly used parts (where discontinued) are on order.
I will add some photos and any further information as it comes back to me. Three weeks of late night and weekends do have an effect so please forgive any omissions. We are thoroughly enjoying renovating the bike but it is frustrating at times. Hubby even bought another project (before things went bad with this one) Suzuki GT200 X5 1980.
I am sure the men in white coats will be paying us a visit soon |

I reckon I could fix that camshaft. I'd need better pics of the cam and the head to make a proper judgement.
The image with the hand in it - 1305 - what is that thing? If it's a centrifugal strainer then that engine is in pretty poor condition I'd say. Lot of metal in there. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
