Hello all. Used to be a biker, racked up 10 years NCB (mostly with Carole Nash) then went to car (transferred my NCB) and now I want to buy a bike again. Phoned up Carole Nash only to be told the law has changed recently and you can no longer transfer your NCBs. So my proud history of NCB's has been wiped, just like that. I'm 40, I want to get a gixxer1000 k1 (value 1K) and I was quoted the same for 3rd party despite my unblemished record (which now means nothing according to them). Do you guys know if this is a new *statutory* law and I've not got to start all over again? I can really do without having to get a piece of cr&p for a few years while having to build my NCB's again. If it's not statutory, does anyone know of an insurance company who would transfer my car NCBs (which originally came from my bike!) back to my bike again?

Thanks in advance.

No claims or not i cant imagine the insurance to be very high at 40, have you had a look at price comparison sites?

GSXR1000 K1 will be in the 2k realm. Not 1.

Your age and licence should help.

41, zero no claims, newly passed rider, 2013 ER6f, full comp plus more extras than I can be arsed to type. £111

Just get some quotes. I was with Swinton last year, Bennetts this year.

Price was unchanged but the level of cover and added extras are better at Bennetts.

I thought my first year would be about 500 quid, I was pleasantly surprised. I do live in good postcode though,
IMO that's what makes the most difference.

Don't know whether it's law or not, but I got stuffed the other way around recently, trying to use bike NCB against a car, so it seems to be 100% industry standard Sad

Cheers. It's a crashed k1 hence the value and was quoted 1K for 3rd party. Basically because it's zero no claims and parked in the street. I wanted to get a knackered one so i dont have to worry to much if it got stolen or whatever (i have no drive nor garage).

I know if i had my NCB's i'd pay about 2/300. My previous gixxer 750 k1 was parked in the street, fully comp etc and i paid less than 200 with CN and that was when i was in my mid 30s.

Thanks for your info on insurance companies / websites - ill give them a try. But despite my old age etc etc...i'm not going to get a quote like i'd get if i had my NCB. This is really annoying as it took me ten years of being a good boy to get that and then they just turn around and say they dont matter anymore. With those NCB' i could get pretty much any bike i want without really needing to faff around shopping. Comparison websites aside, there's also nothing worse than having to go through phone quotes and regurgitating the same old details for ages then getting a silly quote and having to repeat the process over and over. What a yucky business!

My cheapest quotes generally come from www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk

Why do we give business to these lying gobshites?

There's no "law" about NCB, it's merely regulated by the Competition and Markets Authority (Competition Commission / OFT as-was). Their recent "order" on it is here:

https://assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk/media/5509879f40f0b613e6000029/Order.pdf

The only mention of motorcycles in there is to exclude motorcycle policies from the new clarity & consistency rules about NCB protection.

So essentially they can still flim-flam us about what "protected" NCB means, but there's nothing that I can see in there that would prohibit them from transferring it between vehicle types.

Given that it's an invention of the insurance cartel, they can do pretty much what they want with it unless specifically prohibited.

It's not. Swiftcover still take bike NCB as long as you are over 22. Did it last year with mine as I had two sets of bike NCB. Now I have 5 years for car and 7 for bike, even though I've only been driving for a year.

Can't help with changing it back from car to bike though.

NCB has nothing to do with the law - it's purely discretionary on the part of the insurer.

The solution is to find one that will accommodate you.

Good luck.

You need to search out the correct companies then..
AxA or SwiftCover both do it.
I did mine in May this year.
I now have two cars. One with 10+ years NCB and another with 7 years NCB (used to be bikes) Laughing
worked out cheaper than multi car ins Rolling Eyes

Quote:

Your proof of No Claims must be:

issued by your previous insurer in England, Scotland or Wales
less than 24 months old
earned in England, Scotland or Wales on a private car, or
earned in England, Scotland or Wales on a motorbike by a policy holder aged 22 or over
in your name as the policy holder
earned on a full UK or EU licence
used to insure one vehicle only

Now this may just be their own internal choice to gain customers. But does prove that there is NO LAW (or they would be in the shit)....

If any ins broker/co tries siting some LAW that does not exist. Then raise a complaint and let FOS adjudicate on the lieing scum Laughing

Hey thanks for that. That 24 month thing does seem to be the norm, unfortunately mine was about 5 years ago. I heard that generally you lose 1 yr ncb for every unused year so it should be possible(?) to get 5 years from the 10 by phoning around a bit...Anyway glad it's not 'the law' (naughty Carole Nash....they should know better), admiral confirmed this to me yesterday also (my car policy is with them). If I get any success, ill post again which may help others in the same situ.

Many thanks for your comments, much appreciated Wink

Yup, sorry, I've only ever seen them allowing it from within 2 years, and they're getting all "Why ain't yer bin using it, then? Eh? Whatcher bin up to?"

Their game, their rules, sadly.

Well ive been finding insurance companies seem to make it up as they go along.

Bit off topic (as this is my cager) but this whole capping NCB at 5-9 years is a joke. I was with Hasting the last two years and should show 12 years NCB.
Having just quoted and purchased insurance with AxA i get promptly told my NCB is 9 years!

AxA are now querying my no claims as i declared three more than ive been issued...ffs!
