Well the battery is new and hold its charge so I guess it's time for a new loom !
Thanks Alains for your time and help, on this occasion but also countless other time I was looking for info on my beloved NSR  |

If anyone has similar symptoms, I found what was my problem.
In hindsight it's probably something I should have checked first, but I checked the positive wire (red) that goes into the RR for continuity with the positive battery terminal and found a resistance of 600 ohms or so.
Although the first thing we check is the stator, battery and RR. There is a connector where the start switch, fuse and RR wires meet, it's a simple crimp, which looks a bit like the picture shown. I'm guessing with the vibration, moisture etc, it can weaken and break off.
Anyhow, glad to finally have found the answer

glad to hear you got it sorted
There seems to be a few nsr owners having problems with batteries not charging, so this info will be useful.
where exactly is this connection/crimp located? (for future reference)
