 Posted: 10:28 - 13 Sep 2015 Post subject: R6 Clutch Rumble/grinding/annoying bloody noise!! |
 |
|
Hello,
Read a lot of online posts about this already but cant really get a definitive answer, so hoping someone can steer me in the right direction. Current situation is below:
- 2002 Yamaha R6 with 25,000 miles on.
- Bike previously fine, well kept , oil changed very recently, passed MOT earlier this year.
- Bike now have a noise that is at the same speed as the engine and can almost be felt through the foot pegs, the noise goes away when i disengage the clutch.
- Had a second rider confirm noise (my dad) who has been riding bikes a long long time and also suspects clutch.
- If i was to describe the noise in writing it would be like bom ba dum ba dum ba dum ba dum (nah im joking )
So....... what am i going to do about it, i have the haynes manual out, im scouring the internet, its currently on the side stand and ready to have the fairings removed. I am no mechanic but i can follow instructions in a Haynes manual like nobodies business , past experience on bikes only goes to changing chain & sprocket, changing oil, swapping out spark plugs, checking carbs . If i need to remove the engine or do any serious work then the bike is going (paid £2200 for it, dont think i will lose to much of my money)
Going to start with the below:
- Check front sprocket on chain and ensure its actually properly in place
- I dont really want to put i am thinking of inspecting the clutch ( do i have to drain all the engine oil? damn it, i have good oil in there and i aint pouring it back in!!)
So anyone else have any suggestions? further troubleshooting i can do before i take drastic action, its sunday today and ill probably get a chance to look at it in a few days time when my wife and child allow
Thanks in advance for any help ____________________ Knowledge speaks but wisdom listens. |

collapsed thrust bearing?
Old R6's use a pull style clutch/rack and pinion type thing, with a bearing behind it to take the stress when it's disengaged. This. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. Had a similar thing on my ER6, it was just a loose chain, knackered sprockets and tight spots on the chain. C&S swap I'd do first, it's easy, not expensive and you've done it before.
I felt it through the foot pegs and disappeared with the clutch in. ____________________ Currently: Yamaha DT 125 LC2,Repsol Fireblade, and Bumblebee MSX 125 |

If it's the bearing surely it would make the noise in neutral too?
If it does it in neutral when stationary that can run out anything to do with the wheels/chain/sprockets/tyres. ____________________ My Flickr |
