She had a go on the MSX, loved it, it's likely she will have one at 17.

Decided we'd do the CBT now, as although there aren't many changes it's a good excuse to get it done. As soon as her licence arrives we'll do it.

She'd like to ride a geared bike and also not look like a yob. The size of the MSX is good, she's not short. About 5'7 (and still going). Suggestions?

Only thing I can think of so far is a 50cc monkey which I can then change the engine later for fun. Would probably buy new, as at about £700-800 currently. Most 50's will have been ragged to destruction. Don't really fancy 2T as harder to work when you are getting clutch control.

Anything else?

I personally, thinkg the monkey isn't a superb idea. As fun as they are, I've had plenty of blind useless drivers turn in to me and had to avoid at a rapid rate and I've only used its 3 or 4 times on the road. Shocked

I know they get abused, but for a 16 year old, there are only 2 real choices, awesome ped or RS50. You could rebuild an RS50 in your sleep Thumbs Up

Won't be on her own, or at least highly unlikely, literally practice until July. But real practice on the road. Bike will live in my garage and come out when she's with me. Weekends and holidays, probably fair weather at that.

Should've added that

Check Sachs Madass 50, you could fit the 125 engine in, no one would ever notice. Shhh!

Pretty much what I was thinking, just wondered if there was anything else.

I loved my TS50X, it wasn't really that high either for an MX style bike.

I'd rather something like that over a monkey bike.

Actually, forgot about this, not many about though. A little bit bigger and more akin to a real bike. And they take all the lay-down engines. Hmmmmm

2t yes, but most of the peaky unrideable reputation of 2 strokes comes from sporty tuned 2 strokes that make all of their power in the last 20% of the revs.

That description doesn't apply to many 50cc bikes and certainly not a bog standard ts50! Given any restricted 50cc bike, 2t or otherwise, will be making all of about 3bhp you're hardly looking at a torque monster in any case.

+ there are, or at least were when I was considering one, tons of cheap kits and performance parts to really push the performance of the motorcycle beyond what one would consider to be alright for a 16 year old to have. Smile

For the sake of a few months, not prepared to risk anything on her licence, as increases are likely to ad 0.000000000000001 MPH increase! It won't get ridden a lot, mainly just on road practice until she can get a 125, she will be doing car licence too then anyway. Just means when she's 17 she can get straight on a bike capable of going anywhere in and around where I live.

For the most part I have to ride about 5 miles or more in a direction to get out of 20-30mph which means a 50 is ok for now.

My biggest problem with the moped rules is they are forced to a maximum of 28mph, 2mph less than the most common speed limit. Making them vulnerable on the road. Even cyclists can do as much as that on the flat!

An old C50. Retro chique and reasonably fast (should get 45 out of one without even starting to tune it).

Kawasaki AR50 if you can find one that's not been asploded.

A bit of a rattle through ebay came up with this. Not bargain of the century but cool as fuck for a 16 year old lassie:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-SOLO-50-From-Japan-/151502046173?hash=item234639c3dd:g:BLoAAOSwD0lUiIdW

Same seller has some other real oddball 50cc stuff imported from Japan. RD50 among others.

Here's another idea. You're daahn Saaf. Go to France with a van and import something. The French have some real kick-arse sporty mopeds you never see anywhere else.

That is totally Odd, yet cool too. I take your point.

Judging by some of the stuff we've seen kids ragging around the towns in France when we've done tours, this isn't such a bad idea.

I would not let anyone out on a road legal moped if I could possibly avoid it.

6 points, or have some fat drunken old sod smash her like a bowl of eggs?

https://ichef-1.bbci.co.uk/news/660/media/images/69917000/jpg/_69917530_fatal3.jpg

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-28803925

Either one is unlikely, but scale the risk by the consequences.

Absolutely, however a ped on a dual carriageway was the main issue here. I've ridden a similar road on a 125 and not felt safe.

Developing road sense and for fun near us, is what it's about. A1 prep for when she's 17, get her two years over and done with.

Well, thinking of it, you'd have a 50cc motorcycle to start with and put a 160cc engine in it (ebay). I guess it would be a bit swifter than that. We are talking about 18-22HP here, depends on the head, exhaust and intake (carb/filter). The 50cc engine gives you, according to the internet, 2.63HP. Thinking

I was talking 50cc engine with modifications on that, not swap for a larger capacity engine which is 100% not happening. As it stands at least anyway.

Well, then I'd keep it stock, they say it should do 45kph (Am friendly in the EU). If you ride slow stuff defensively and do not overtake other road user when at speed, it is rather alright.

As above, only really likely to be going out with us.

In actual fact, we could could ride to Ace Cafe from where we are and only touch a 50mph dual carriageway literally 1 mile from Ace Cafe the A40 and even then we could probably avoid it. That's about 15 miles.

I wouldn't really feel safe on a 45kph/28mph motorcycle on a road where others go nearly double my top speed. Bear in mind, if the top speed of it is 45kph and it's not done by ''clever'' gearing (short final drive gear ratio = hitting the rev limiter at the top gear), the crusing speed would be about 40kph/25mph, maybe less. Thumbs Up

I'd avoid such roads if I could, even though the de-tour would be 30 extra minutes on the bike. Some cool, nice back roads, full of corners, nice scenery, cruising at 20-25mph, no need to rush. Smile

Yeah, that was the point, we have no intention of ever going on roads >30mph. I was merely demonstrating that we could actually get to Ace Cafe for a ride without deviating from roads for which a 50cc would be OK on (note I didn't say safe!).
