Answer: it depends.
Sometimes you'll want to be close to the left when you exit, sometimes, you'll be towards the right. Depends on the roundabout, the traffic and where you're going next. There's no magic rule.
I've had a pedalist shoot through a roundabout at the bottom of a hill and overtake on the left. If I hadn't looked left and given him room, I've had had him embedded in me.
It depends. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

^^^ This.
It depends which exit you use to exit. 1st exit you look left, 2nd exit you look right, 3rd exit you look left. These are standard safety checks. Having said there is nothing standard on the road and the answer is it depends. Where do you expect the danger to come from.
You have marked all the usual nut jobs (White Vans, cycles, buses, trucks, Volvos, Minis, BMWs, Audis, Subarus, 4x4s, Minivans, 208s, VW Golfs basically all car models) on the approach, and you may want to look again and check are they are gonna do something stupid, most likely yes ____________________ Adrian Monk: Unless I'm wrong, which, you know, I'm not...

You will look right when entering the roundabout. |
Agree to disagree here.
If you exit the second exit you always look right, because from there all the guys who are NOT in the correct lane will try to overtake and cut you down, and they are coming from behind you means you may have missed some Subaru in the mirrors. Hence required right lifesaver.
And you do not need to do a left shoulder check, you know what is on the left side of you, because you just have passed the 1st exit from which any danger can come to you - so no need for left shoulder check on 2nd exit.
That is exactly what all instructors that I know are teaching and what is required on DAS mod 2.

Which exit? Because all roundabout exits are left, but matters which number is you are exiting. 1st, 2nd or 3rd?
For example checking right shoulder when you exit 1st or 3rd exits is something completely wrong. You already have seen the traffic comming to your right on the approach. What you need is left lifesaver there, because the only danger can come to you from behind on the left side, because you may have missed something in the mirrors and you are going left. ____________________ Adrian Monk: Unless I'm wrong, which, you know, I'm not...

As already said, do as your instructor says and get your licence.
Then as you ride more you will gain experience and more awareness... this means you learn that riding by the book isnt always safest.
95% of the time the books you read are right... but certain conditions mean you have to adapt

The above example for instance.... which shoulder is best to check ____________________ You know you are old when you're told to slow down by your doctor and not the police. |

Don't base it on which lane you're in or which lane you're supposed to look at. It's not really about any sort of prescribed rule for where you're expected to mechanically crane your neck to pass the test. It's supposed to be about saving your skin. Just check anywhere a life-threatening hazard might be coming from. The idea is to get a feel for where these dangers might be.
( Personally I even do sly shoulders checks when I'm out walking on the footpath now, I can't help it any more ) |
