... if the government gave motorcyclists a yearly grant to buy some extra gear - after all; we are cutting down on congestion.

Just throwing it out there.

I probably still wouldn't buy waterproofs or safer riding trousers/boots Shifty prolly spend it on LED lights under the GSX, or an electric vest for the Harley or something.

The government aren't there to support people, they are there to run the country. Talk about sense of entitlement! Why is it whenever anything is wrong people demand the government throw money at it? So you're saying that taxpayers should pay for motorcyclists to ride bikes?

One could argue that motorcyclists use a disproportionate amount of the NHS's time and resources, so encouraging people to ride, even with gear is a loss maker.

I strongly disagree with the idea that the government is there to solve peoples every day problems. Especially not by throwing money at them.

I think a thermal base layer and heated grips grant for the over 45s is in order.

No, because then they'd get the idea of being able to dictate what is approved government gear and make it mandatory.

Then the inevitable lawsuit 'The government made me ride now I am quadraspazzed.'

I presume you've already looked at the grants which are available (depending on your personal circumstances) that could be used to pay for such things.

It might be a bit of a push to claim that you need the money to buy extra gear, especially if you've already got some, but if you don't ask then you certainly don't get.

Which have you looked at and why were you not eligible?

a motorcycle helmet that meets British safety standards (this doesn’t apply if you’re Sikh and wearing a turban)
motorcycle boots or other sturdy footwear that provides support and ankle protection
textile or leather motorcycle trousers or heavy denim trousers
a textile or leather motorcycle jacket or a heavy denim jacket with several layers underneath
motorcycle gloves

If you want to get your license, that is.

I do imagine it's only a matter of time before there are minimum clothing requirements on the road.

It would be better for me to walk to work, so I think the government should pay for a second home for me to live near to work.

I agree. It should also help cover some of the cost to furnish it Smile

What a cheap cunt you are. Gear is not expensive, you have more choice than ever. A full set of acceptable gear can be had under 100 quid and wouldn't surprise me if the pockets more waterproof than the dianese bollocks I bought first time round. Yearly you say... Some of my gear is over 4 years old and has a lot of miles, and does not need replacing (yes some does.. when I find something worthy of my cash!)

Why should the government have any part supporting the bike clothing industry, of which very little made in the UK and is mostly fashion rather than functional products, with half the stuff being utter shite and way over priced... I would not support this idea!

The gov has helped, for example the sharp helmet scheme.. Id quite like to see it expanded to crash testing other items... boots/gloves/armour etc..

Ebay is great for cheap second hand kit too.

My jacket I still use today I got for 7 quid on ebay in 2007 when I started riding. Granted it's got a hole in the outer shell where I dropped it on the exhaust unwittingly last year, apart from that though it's getting on a bit but still useable.

This thread has made me notice that I've had the same jacket for 15 years.

Leather doesn't really wear out.

Move to Belgium - motorcycle & motorcycling equipment (as well as your fuel) is tax deductable over X years if you use it for commuting.

But Zips do. Especially boot zips.

When I first bought gear, got a rather expensive dianese shit textile jacket. rubbish. The cunt at P&H also swapped it for a larger version instead of the one I tried which fit. I sold it on ebay for 100 or so ... week later bought exactly the same, in better condition, in my size, for 34 quid from a local ebay selller. Last year the right pocket zip buggered itself. This year, some very careful adjustment, got zip working again Mr. Green

But all the pockets still fucking leak Mad
