As the VFR has a single swing arm, is wheel misalignment a problem? I recently changed the rear brake pad and have noticed my chain having irregular tension when the wheel is turned. Could this be due to the way I have fitted the back wheel again or do I just need to replace the drive chain (it has been 36,000 miles)?

Check for dead links in the chain. Thumbs Up

IF the wheel alignment was wrong, you'd see uneven wear on the chain and sprockets. I mean the inside and outside of the sprocket's teeth and chain. Thumbs Up

EDIT: 36,000 miles pretty much sounds like a new chain time. 36k is more than I've got on my clock at the moment and I don't have the original factory fitted chain there. Smile

Chains wear with tight and loose spots. Measure and set your chain tension at the tightest spot.

As above, if it has stiff links it may need replacing.
