A Hornet will have a bit more 'oomph' to it.
Although try and get a slightly newer one as they got a few changes in the later years (past '01 I believe) with a slightly larger front wheel which made handling better and easier for tyre choices. Past '03 gets you a nicer dash and '05 goes digital dash and USD forks. ____________________ Yamaha RXS 100 > Honda CD 250 > Honda Hornet 600 > Honda CBR 600RR > Yamaha RXS 100 > Kawasaki ZX6R J2 > Yamaha FZ1 |

99 Hornet.
Yeah, tiny tank, especially on an early one like mine.
Easily forgiven when you realise that it hustles quite well.
Just reset the trip counter when you fuel up and fill up every 90-100 miles.
You might get more mpg for less revs, but then that would beg the question of why a hornet
It is not a sensible commuter choice, which is exactly why I like commuting on it and like previous bikes, will all year round... Keeps the journey a little less tedious. ____________________ Slowly learning...

CBF: better finished, slower, better mpg
Hornet: faster, sportier, more involving, stupid tank range.
Get a Hornet unless you'll be commuting more than 90% of the time. ____________________ Triumph Daytona 675 track bike + girlfriend's Honda Hornet 600

I have an early Hornet and love it! I have had over 130 miles on a tank when I was just tootling around but get it over 7000 revs and it really comes to life! then the fuel consumption goes down. it is an all round fun machine and handles easily. |

Bear in mind that "quicker" and "slower" are relative, and in bike terms.
A CBF600 is still going to show its heels to most 4 wheeled vehicles at anywhere near license-retaining speeds.
That said, the point of any IL4 is to rev, so what kind of commuting are we talking about? I'm just fine with twins and singles for that purpose. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

It might be a bit cheaper to insure, and the tank range will be better.
However, if you are willing to widen your bike search, you could consider other IL4 600's, most of which will have a better range than the Hornet, and something like the FZ6 will be comparable to the Hornet on price and power/performance, but will get up to 160 miles to a tank. I use mine for short commuting and it's excellent for the job, and is also a fun bike for weekends etc. ____________________ Current: 2009 SV650 S, 1990 Kawasaki GT550
