Slightly concerned ordering a new helmet online. Is it a an old wives tale to replace a dropped helmet? Online is a lot cheaper but don't want the worry of not knowing if the helmet is okay!

The one in the shop could have been dropped. The one on line could have been dropped.

If you can't see damage, don't worry.

Consider the box a helmet for the helmet. It'll be fine.

I'd be more concerned it doesn't fit properly, that could cause you a lot more damage than rolling round in the back of a van will.

OP, if you want to purchase a good-fitting helmet with the back-up service that a bricks and mortar supplier can provide then you should purchase from a bricks and mortar supplier. If you choose to 'save' a couple of quid (and gamble your safety) by buying from some internet-based lucky lucky man then more fool you.
Don't come crying to us if you die.

Make a tin foil under helmet in preparation and wear it if you suspect they may have possibly dropped it. You'll be ok then.

What online shop are you getting it from?
If it's sportsbikeshop.co.uk then you don't need to worry about damage in transit. They are double boxed with additional packing between them.

If it's being delivered by Hermes you can guarantee it'll have been dropped, kicked and then thrown over your gate ready for any passing stranger to pinch Evil or Very Mad

Just go down to a shop, try on various lids, then go online order the same one that was a perfect fit in the shop. TAKE a motorcycle mate with you, he should know how the lid should fit. You would be surprised how many people buys a lid too big or too small. Too loose helmet is a safety hazard, too tight helmet will give you headaches and you won't enjoy riding.

It is not like you are going to buy a new helmet everytime a GP rider changes his team or you buy a new motorcycle and want to mach the new colour scheme or any other crap. A good lid, if not going to kill yourself, is a 5+years investment. I still ride in my lid and it's been 6 years since I bought it, still fits great.

The only worry you should have when buying a lid is, whether the lid is a genuine piece of equipment and all the stickers with legal info are real. Yes, even motorcycle helmets are being counterfeited. Wink

Unless the courier actually puts it on and then smashes his head off the ground, he's not going to damage the polystyrene that will actually protect you.

It'll be coming in a cardboard box.

If that looks badly damaged, refuse to accept the shipment.

Or, and this is just a thought, you could go to the shop, ask for them to help make sure it fits properly and then buy it there for the extra tenner and not have to worry about delivery and help a local shop out. They must be pretty sick of people coming in, trying stuff on and walking straight out.

Well, yes, but that is not what OP wants to hear, is it?

That's a bit harsh? As long as you can return the thing if it doesn't fit properly, I don't see a problem buying online

Totally agree. Where are you going to try a hemet on when all the bricks and mortar shops have closed due to people abusing their helpfullness.

The likelihood of a helmet being dropped during shipping before the consumer gets their grubby mits on it is pretty high.

On the plus side they are usually well packaged.

Don't buy a Shoei then, it's a helmet in a cloth bag in a box in my experience (onto my 3rd Shoei now).

The only thing i can see the box doing is making stacking them easy.

Odd, which did you buy? Mine were 2x Raid 2 and 1 XR1100 (i think it's an 1100), Mum's Raid 2 was the same (same shop) and I don't recall my Dad's Raid having anything extra in it but he had that before I started riding.
