So today was my final mod 2.
Woke up around 6am, room spinning and feeling nauseous. Not good.
Didn't have to be there until 12, so I found time to man up and worked out the room only spins when I tilt my head.
Went to the training school and hopped on their Gladius, headed out to the test centre. BUT THEN, went to park up and the front brake went slack. Pumped it quickly and got it to stop. Turns out one of the brake pads had let go and was hanging out of the calliper. Could not reinsert due to some dick pumping the brake.
Anyway, bike recovered, luckily they'd taken two of us so I got to go on the other bike. Still a Gladius, but with different bars on. Examiner nearly called it off due to wind and rain but we got out in the end.
Passed, great success!
Had to go back as a pillion on the instructors bike, which was a new experience for me. Did not like, but he was gentle with me.

tl;dr
Shouldn't have operated machinery today
Killed a bike
Passed test
Rode pillion
Kitten casualties: 0

Well done Thumbs Up

Did you find the anxiety of everything else going wrong meant you were just relieved to be able to take your test rather than nervous about it?

I certainly was when I got a puncture on the way to the test centre and had to run back home, get the car, drive to a training school near the test centre, borrow a bike (free - thanks Lightning Oxford) and race to the test centre just in time to take my test on a bike I'd never even sat on before. I was so relieved to get there that I wasn't nervous at all.

The pads didn't seem worn, instructor said the only time he's seen it happen was on his old ZX550 when one side of the calliper seized so it only wore down one side, but this one didn't seem bad.

Don't seem to have much luck with brakes, can't get the ones on my ZZR to stop bloody leaking either!

Reminds me of mine, pulled up at the test center at end of test, puts side stand down and it fell off completely. There's me sat on the bike the assessor asking why the hell I'm still sat there and not inside as asked, leaned it against the wall like a BMX ha ha.

Hell no I can't take it out with no brakes. I've completely stripped and rebuilt the calipers, I've probably not cleaned out the seal recesses well enough.

The tokico callipers are total dogshite. Swap them out for Nissins, if you trawl eBay you can probably do it for similar cost to rebuilding the shite ones.

I persevered with my tok's for ages, rebuilding, swapping between my 3 sets, bleeding, various pads. Even freshly built and bled they are spongey crap. I threw a set of nissins from an old blade on about a month ago and now want to scourge myself with a cat-o-nine tails for not doing it sooner.

Here is what I used and how I did mine. I had to hack at my mudguard, a lot of other Nissins that can be used don't require that (but often cost a lot more).

https://www.zzr-international.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=16315

or if you prefer YouTube format https://youtu.be/wyUfbhTYce4

Here is a complete list of what fits (though spacers and/or shouldered bolts are usually needed)

https://www.zzr-international.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=14658

It's worth joining zzr international. It's a bit slow as a forum but very useful as a knowledge base.

These look about right then? For £50 it would save me a lot of hassle and finally give me some use out of the bloody thing!

Same as I used.

To mount them you can...

1 - 10mm-8mm shouldered bolt and use washers between calliper and leg as spacers

2 - Get/DIY tap the nissins to 10mm, use original bolts and washers to space

3 - Splash out on these and use some 8mm bolts. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ZZR1100-ZZR600-CALIPER-SPACERS-TO-RUN-GSXR1000-CALIPERS-/231728856372?hash=item35f41dbd34:g:XWMAAOSwpDdU465T

I used option 3 because.... lazy, no farting about trying to get the spacing right.

Ali, but yeah price is a bit bonkers, I got lucky at auction and paid £13 for the callipers though so decided to splash out.

Using shouldered bolts you'll want a handful of washers too, you'll need to space out between calliper and leg by around 2mm (with the top hat spacer the rim bit does that).

Had leaky calipers on step stalks zxr, it was badly made bleed nipples that came with the seal kit. It was only a slight leak so it was difficult to see as the fluid was running down the middle of the caliper.

Just a thought, might be worth a look?

I threw away the old bleed nipples, I'll have a look and see if there's anything coming through the middle. Thread should be fine, I used PTFE tape.
