Iphone 5 battery life

So, got myself an iPhone 5 the other month, had an iPhone 4 before and the battery was pretty good on that. This 5 however is so weird and need to know if it's normal, or is it my battery is fooked?

Battery goes down pretty quickly, if I watch videos, the life will last about 20/30 mins, sat nav about 30 mins. On 3 occasions, the battery has jumped from 30-40% to dead in 2-3 seconds.

I used to have one and the battery would generally last all day if I wasn't constantly using it. Games, videos and sat nav will drain battery faster but not THAT fast. Have a look at getting a new battery. If you're not confident installing it yourself, there are loads of independent Apple repair shops around that charge a fraction of the price. There's a good one in Leeds called iPatch for example.

batteries knackered. is it a new one?

my 5 started dying after 20mins or so, basically had to keep it on charge all the time or it would die when i wanted it.

bought one of those cheapo replacement kits off ebay, swapped the battery and now i can go 2/3 days between charges using it pretty frequently. ipod during the day, some browsing when on the throne, kodi remote in the evening..

2/3 days.... I'd say the battery is the original comparing to this.

I charge my 5S pretty much every night, by which point it will be around the 30-40% mark & I don't use it a lot throughout the day.

I Miss my iPhone 4, if I didn't start having signal issues I'd swap back in a heartbeat

Since posting this morning, I foolishly used my phone as a torch in the garage. The garage has a hard, concrete floor.
Im off to iPatch for a new screen tomorrow.

Sounds like the battery needs calibrating as I've seen this happen a few times with both apple and android phones. The fact its dropping by 30% is typical. Run your phone flat till it turns off then charge totally before turning the phone back on. You might have to do it a couple of times but it'll reset your battery indicator to show correctly. It fixed issues with an iPhone 5 that was thought to be shot back to normal. Lipo battery usage indicators need it doing periodicly if its a phone or any other equipment as it'll take into account the battery condition over time. Failing that look at apps that cause drain and finally new battery time but the fact it drops in a big step hints at the first step being needed.

My 5 battery was dying a similar death, although maybe not as severe. Running down fast when used and jumping from 39% to 8% in an instant.

I tried all the usual suggestions for resetting counters etc and got a few more months out of it, but eventually gave in a bought a new battery.

I picked one up from these guys: https://www.appleipodparts.com/ simply based on the fact that I liked their YouTube vids of self-repairs. Also picked up a couple of the tools from their site too.

Since then I’ve also replaced the home button on by wife’s 4 and the power button and battery on my son’s 3GS.

My tips are use a decent desk lamp and try to keep track of all the tiny screws with a marked tray of some kind. Also if you need to heat parts to release glue pads I found that reusable chemical hand warmers work well. You know, the ones with the little clicker disk in them. Set a couple off, stick the parts in between them, wrap in a cloth and leave for 20 mins for the heat to soak right through. Makes releasing screens and batteries much easier.
