It goes the same way as the sexist views on physical abuse, rape etc against males...
Men are supposed to be tough, resilient and just 'deal with it'...
Sexism alive and well just where it belongs it would seem |

I remember learning about a fairly similar thing ten years ago at Sixth Form. I was doing Media Studies, which is undoubtedly a total lardy dar waste of time subject but I learned an interesting lot about society, the way things work, the way people are, etc.
The rise in living standards, technology etc has led to a rapid demasculinisation of society. Many tens of thousands of years of social, biological, psychological evolution is suddenly left in a horrible stasis. Men have nothing to do, and no power to actually feel like men. Unless they're playing football, rugby, UFC, etc but that's a rather limited scope in an otherwise stagnant situation. What about hunting, survival, achievement, discovery? It's too easy, there's no deep sense of being alive, and men are bored, lifeless, lost.
I hate the extreme end of the equality campaign. 'Men being men' is not a 'modern social conditioning' issue, it's biological (hormones, brain pattern, etc), and now we're expected to just stop doing it, or worse, feel guilty about it..?
Add to this the fact that most jobs these days are simple earners, going from A to B, pushing buttons, office work, situations where alpha male types are forced to follow rules from guys who would undoubtedly be subordinate in a normal social situation.
Social hierarchy is somewhat innate, based on character, physique, mannerisms which have been built up and complexified over many thousands of years. It's all being shot to pieces by the 'do not offend', 'everybody's a winner' culture.
It's no wonder more men kill themselves than women. The bottom line is this: Our purpose is to have sex, collect as much food as possible and build a safe and comfortable permanent home. In a world where these things are pretty much handed to us on a plate, and where social structure is littered with arbitrary rules preventing the formation of a natural hierarchy or status, it's no wonder there are more and more guys feeling heavily dissatisfied with their lot in life.
And then on a completely separate note, there's also the little social things e.g. the demise of the British pub, overpriced cafes, etc - there's nowhere to go and mix with people any more. When you feel isolated or alone there's nowhere to go. I literally do not know of a single 'social space' in any city where you can just go and mill around with people enjoyably. I'll compare this with India and China, where you can go to a chai shop and sit with locals and talk about the events of the day, or a teahouse where randomers will band together and play chess, mahjong and smoke and drink tea. Do we have that in the UK? Nope! We're all becoming more and more alone with nowhere to turn. Ok this last point is also an issue for women too, but thought I'd mention it anyway because I think social cohesion and community is a vital aspect contributing towards overall happiness in lif.
Rant over
TL;DR - Demasculinisation of society, and not enough 'community stuff' to keep people happy and together.

In relation to what I've written above, I would argue that the issue is more that the world is not any more the 'natural' place we evolved to live in!

Sad times when it's a family chap, and we all know someone who knows someone.
But some chaps offing themselves will be loners and losers, and doing it because they recognise that they are genuinely surplus to requirements. You could probably categorise a lot of chronic drink and drug abuse deaths in there too, it's just a slower check-out process.
How big is that latter group, and is it actually a problem?
We're in an age run by target obsessed Nannies, where all deaths that can be prevented must be prevented.
But saying that every death is a tragedy doesn't make it so </Hitler>, and the world isn't under-peopled, is it? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Agreed.
So, unless the world now consists mainly of wet, dish rag, wastes of testosterone, I also disagree with Smegballs.
Although, he is correct in that people are born without the mental facility to survive this techno, sit-on your-arse-all-day world exactly because of the genetical predispositions mentioned above. |

That's a disgraceful misrepresentation of the debate. Only trolls have stooped that low. You can see for yourself what actually made her laugh. Go to 14:53:25 https://goo.gl/2WGOux
Men who want sympathy would be much more likely to get it if they didn't try to make their point with pathetic, dishonest attacks on powerful, intelligent, articulate women. ____________________ Current bike: K1100RS. "The battle between new Labour MP Jess Phillips and the most rebellious Tory backbencher Philip Davies continues. The pair clashed last week during a meeting of parliament's Backbench Business Committee over Davies' call for an International Men's Day.
Phillips failed to stifle her laughter at the Tory MP's suggestion to the committee "in the spirit of gender equality" that the Commons should have a debate to commemorate such a day because "the opportunity for men to raise issues that are important to them is very limited". "I'm not entirely sure why it's so humorous," Davies harrumphed in response to Phillips' reaction."

Do the figures include suicide bombers? They've certainly been on the up.
That said, there was some twat on the news today who blew herself up. Equality in action. ____________________ Yamaha FZ6 S2 |

University of York student tops himself. Before he's cold, the University cancel Men's Day because (I shit you not) they didn't ask wimmin what being a man is really about.

Well, get it out of your system, pets, you don't want to still be shrieking like harpies when your biological alarm clock goes off and you need to find someone to bankroll your baby farming. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Males tend to be more likely to use methods that are quick and effective, while females tend to be more likely to use methods which take longer, giving more chance for someone to find and save them | That is true to some extent, although I wouldn't say its the main cause for the difference in male:female suicide rates.
| skatefreak wrote: | Men are supposed to be tough, resilient and just 'deal with it'... | This is probably the biggest factor indirectly - men are a lot less likely to seek/continue getting support for mental health issues than women generally. Men also have much higher rates of alcoholism (or rather issues that lead them to alcoholism), which has strong correlations with suicide.
Interesting side point - suicide rates in Scotland (which are much higher than England) have actually been declining for a while, whilst they've continued rising more and more in other parts of the UK - Possibly down to changes in funding and organisaton of mental health services by the Scottish government.

We're in an age run by target obsessed Nannies, where all deaths that can be prevented must be prevented. | We're all 'surplus to requirements'. I'm not sure where you're getting 'must' be prevented from, but 'can' be prevented is absolutely true in a lot of cases at least - so yes, people commiting suicide when it can be avoided and they can return to a content and productive state of life is a 'problem', just like someone dying of preventable cancer is a 'problem'.
<sarcasm>Maybe we shouldn't bother with any cancer, heart disease and diabetes treatment for everyone who doesn't run 10 miles a day and live off a diet of organic fruit and veg? Anyone treating their body otherwise is engaging in a slower self-destructive process to the one many alcoholics and drug addicts are afterall? Is that/their deaths 'really a problem'? That would really cull the population .</sarcasm>

So rather than:
.... in particular the practice of trafficking and forced-prostitution
.... in particularly female genital mutilation
.... in particular the practice of child brides
.... in particular lack of educational opportunities in 3rd world countries
or anyone of the other genuine, often horrific, problems facing women in the world, their main cause for concern boils down to "muh female CEOs" |

The obvious answer to why no female CEO is "Because patriarchy" rather than "because career gap to have kids" or " must take day off because kids" or "on the blob today, so more mental than usual". ____________________ My Flickr |
