Hi All,

I'm looking at going over to the IOM for the southern 100 next year, and was wondering if anyone else has been in the past, on their bikes, and could give me any pointers?

i guess the cheapest way to do it would be to camp, which isn't a problem, but I'm not so clued up when it comes to taking your bike on the ferry etc.

also, anything i need to be aware of on the island itself? any funny rules/traffic laws/stuff i need to carry with me?

thanks,

Lee

Once you've got your ferry booked there's not a lot to worry about.
Make sure your alarm's disabled, on your bike, once it's stowed on the ferry.
Camping's easy, plenty of sites to choose from.
Mobile phone signal can be very dodgy, the advice for the TT, was to buy a Manx sim, we didn't and Mrs Suntan's phone had a brain fart!
Take a cheap transistor radio, you'll need it to hear the race commentary, or pay through the teeth to listen to it on your phone, the choice is yours!
Nothing to worry about on the roads, just keep looking in your mirrors, plenty of wannabees around, especially on the mountain road.

Enjoy it!

After going in march i would say get the manx mobile sim, roaming charges can be brutal.

The bike will be fine on the ferry, i went from Liverpool on the sea cat and on the way back it was blowing a gale, everything bouncing around and even some of the crew looking seasick but none of the bikes moved at all.

Enjoy your trip Thumbs Up

Switch your phone off for the duration, much easier and no one can interrupt your holiday Laughing

I went in 2012, I thought it was brilliant. I'd only seen short circuit racing before and to be so close to people doing monster speeds on what is usually a public road left me gobsmaked! I'd make an effort to get up early for a lap of the TT course too. As I went over the mountain I let my then new 1198 off its leash a bit and made my way round the mountain course, wondering how the TT racers average 130+ mph...
I stayed in a lady's private house, she was really helpful to the extent of kicking her car out of her garage to allow my bike in.
The food (eating out) was good, and the weather fortunately was good too. If I went again (hopefully next year) I'd pack a towel near the top of my luggage though to protect your bike paintwork from the ferry securing arrangements. It was then rather agricultural to say the least, although that may have been changed now.

I'm looking forward to returning now I'm thinking back!
Any more info feel free to message me...[/img]

The only thing you need to be aware of is that NSL sign means pin it. That's the expectation. I was doing 90 on the mountain road on my first day there and a police car battered past about about 110, it's just how things are done over there. No need to speed in built up areas, so don't take the piss. They don't take kindly to tourists getting done for DD, or speeding massively above posted limits from what I hear.

Southern is quieter than the TT, so should be easier to get around.

I went to the Manx GP in 2012 and it was great, will be going back in the next few years.

I. O. M. ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ (recurring)
Guaranteed shit weather, Guaranteed rip off ferry, only good thing is the Quids In bar in Douglas.
Not all bad, at least you get to wander the pits and talk to people.... and that's about it.
