Is there a ghetto test for asbestos? I have Artex and I want to put a loft access hatch in but will have to cut through some artex. Online testing kits are forty quid+ which seems a bit steep.

Cheers

Take a sample (Half a handful of finely ground material should do) Inhale deeply and wait 25/30 years see if anything happens.

It's OK - you'll get murked by a disgruntled former employee of a motorcycle accessories retailer before pleural plaques take hold so I'd not worry

Not to state the obvious (but I will since I have no idea how much you know), but you could eliminate the possibility altogether if you know when the building was built?

WTF are you doing living in the 70s? Smile

Allegedly, there's a 'less harmful' asbestos in Artex but it is still asbestos and it still creates dust.

Any dust should be/is considered harmful and proper PPE and work practices are recommend and or legislated for.

Normal work requires cheap PPE. Tyvek overalls and an asbestos appropriate respirator/mask.

The important point is Job Planning to avoid creating dust.
Good hygiene by not contaminating 'clean' areas with material and PPE from 'dirty' areas.

That is what most of the phaph is about. Proper training.

Some cool info here:

https://www.asbestoswatchdog.co.uk/home

I worked for a demo company and one of the major cash earners was asbestos removal. Money for old rope really. Smile

The building was 1925 the artex possibly 1980s onwards.

What will you do differently based on the answer?

Might be simpler to go ahead and assume that it does have asbestos and treat it accordingly.

I suppose go a bit more over the top if I know its got asbestos in it. I have the recommended PPE. I have a 3m respirator rated for use with chemicals but filters are expensive and would obviously have to be ditched rather than reused. But then a £30+ for a test it probably cheaper to just assume there's asbestos.

Its a fucking pain though. Whoever invented Artex was a twat.

1980's artex usually contains very low levels of crysotile (or nothing) but it could potentially contain any of the amphibole types or a mix of all of them in any concentration.

There is NO way to self-test for the stuff unless you happen to be an analyst. Fibres require a microscope to identify (and training).

Just assume that there is Asbesdoes unless you fancy getting the bad aids. And stop being such a tight cunt and wear the correct PPE. Thumbs Up

Pretty much this

It's almost certainly non licenced non notifiable asbestos and not in a distressed state. All the advice is on the HSE website. If you do decide to get someone in to do it, they don't need decontamination pits or the like and it's something they're used to dealing with so if they try to rip you off just hire another contractor.

Spray the area you're cutting with shaving foam and get on.

I don't give a fuck what any HSE advice says, I did this 3 years ago and I haven't died yet.

Thumbs Up

If you're prepared to entrust your health to a £2.99 can of shaving foam then fair play.

Personally I'd rather protect myself properly against that stuff. Thumbs Up

Can't you take a sample and ask a local lab? University of some sort should have a lab where they test such a thing. One glance under the microscope and you should know the answer. Wink

Googling around, there are places in the UK, where they perform test for asbestos.

Local authority website actually recommends shaving foam as a barrier. But not for any substantial removal I think shaving foams just meant for if your drilling through or nailing through.

There's a guy who used to drive a bin lorry in Glasgow who has the same attitude to H+S.

Asbestos related diseases from cutting a loft access in artex?
