Hi folks,

Lidl have their a Powerflex socket set for sale again for £34.99 https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/our-offers-2491.htm?action=showDetail&id=29160 Has anyone used this?

I have a 3/8 Halfords Professional set (12 point) just now, so this set would give me most of the tools I need for jobs on the car and bike.

Would you recommend buying this set or going for something like a stand alone Clark Pro 1/2 set? https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/pro155-19pce-1-2-drive-socket-set/

Regards,
Steven

Never used them myself... but I've bought a couple of cheap socket sets in the past (probably around 7-8 years now), and only cracked 1 17mm socket so far.

On the link you posted, I could see me buying the socket set and combination spanners though

I've got a few sets of Powerfix Spanners (open, ring and combo) and they are probably the best cheap spanners I've ever bought.

I've got loads of sockets already, but that set looks like a handy one to have around.

I have/have had these cheap sockets at various times (there are loads and loads on ebay).

They offer excellent value for money - even the current one that was under £25 delivered isn't bad.

An excellent start to work on that cover the vast majority of things you could need.

There's nothing wrong with Lidl toolkits. They're good value for money and pretty decent quality. I've got the bigger version their toolkit and I've been using it for a few years now, no problems with any of it really. Thumbs Up

The actual sockets themselves will be solid.

However if its anything like the set I got from them last year the ratchet mechanism is made of cheese and will likely disintegrate after 2 uses.

But if youve already got a decent ratchet thingy, £35 for a full set of sockets aint bad.

Quarter of half inch?

I've never had trouble with the half inch ones, but the quarter inch ones can't be used for high torque, which can be tempting when there's no three eights inch. There are, of course sliding T-bars in both sizes for when you need more force.

There's always ebay - some of the tolerances on the cheaper ones may not be great.
A 'good year' banded one is a good bet, presuming their quality is consistent.

The ones on ebay are not of the same quality. I manage to shear off the half inch extension on the cheapo set from eBay. Then used the other from lidl and did it with ease.

The ebay ones actually feels like cheese. I could see the shearing happening!

One thing nobody has mentioned here is the socket box. Your socket set won't be worth a f**k if all the bits are scattered in the bottom of your big tool box. Spend a little bit of time considering how robust the box ( or the plastic insert ,if its a steel box) is.

Ebay ones vary - I've had good and less good ones.
Biggest problem with the really cheap one was the sliding being slack.
No problem with the other 1/2" stuff.

It's a MAJOR issue with the relatively decent Halfrauds sets. I had to replace the box under warranty when the lock tabs and hinges eventually failed beyond semi-functional.

The box was replaced but since it was difficult to identify the model/catalogue number of the box they furnished another box but all the 'bits' don't fit in.

So now have a myriad of sockets 'n' shit in the bottom of my big tool box.
Which is also fcuked now after becoming subject to/of a slight temperus tantrumus that I had one fine day when I tripped over the hoowur in the garage. (Trying to squeeze past bludy motorbikes.) Rolling Eyes

I got one of these from Amazon recently at 60 Quid.. Pretty solid and not "chromed" to make them look pretty. A substantial socket set..

A BAHCO 1/4 and 1/2 metric socket set

I'm guessing they will be on offer again after the madness of the next two weeks..

The link no longer works, but when I did see what else Lidls had for sale I noticed a 5 piece ratchet spanner set for £9.99.With them all in useful 17,14,13,10 and 8mm sizes,I was in two minds about value for money and so was pleasantly surprised at how good they are for the money.

Nicely made in Germany as well, which makes a change to the usual chinky cr@p

The only sockets I've bought from Clarke are there impact wall grip ones.
Cost £40, look OK quality, as to any other sockets if I don't have that particular size all I would do is buy that particular socket.
My socket sets are 1/4, 3/8 and 3/4 Halfords Advanced ones. So currently have sockets going up to 50mm.
Doing chain and sprockets are a doddle here Smile
I would say buy the Carke one and then look at getting some combination spinners as well.
Maybe an impact driver as well.

Got a link?

Always interested to see other wall-drive options.
