That was random. Got any links? Do petrol pumps randomly burst in to flame regularly?

How often does this happen then?

I saw some videos of bikes crashing online as well; does that mean make us dimwit's for choosing to ride bikes too?

Anyone who calls it a "servo" has got to be Australian. I thought the Aussies were all laid back and whatever?

People die crossing the road. You suckers who cross the road... fuck dat shit, I'ma stayin' this side, where it's safe. It's all good, there's a pub this side of the road, although no shops or anything. I mostly stay in the house and order stuff online.

Oh wait! People die sitting on their sofas. I mostly spend my time lying on the floor waiting for my Tesco orders. And when it arrives I eat everything straight away in case any food is near its use-by date.

Not only do I do it.
My instructor filled his bike sat on it, then mine while I was alongside him sat on mine, followed by the other student's when I rolled forward 😀

We obviously are all horribly burned and dead...

Haha, what an out of the blue thing to say.

I have never seen a fuel pump spontaniously combust, never seen one whilst in one or driving/riding past one, heard of it on the news, newspapers nothing. So, how often does this happen oh wise OP???

Should I be taking extra precautions whilst around fuel? If so what should I do? Please educate us dimwits.

Sitting on the bike whilst refueling is a safety feature actually ,- if there was a fire, I'd be the first one out of there as I'm already ready to go see.

Happens regularly in the US.

There are a series of things that need to happen which are unlikely to happen in the UK, mainly because they don't allow you to lock the pump lever in the on position.

Motorcycles can and do go up. Usually if people overfill the tank, the fuel finds its way out down the overspill hose and lands on the hot exhaust, vapourising. Tiniest spark can then ignite it.

Most pump fires are caused when someone in a hot area gets out of the car, puts the nozzle in the tank, locks it on then gets back into the (air conditioned) car where it's cool. The auto cut-off kicks in when it's full. They get back out of the car and in doing so generate a static charge. They reach for the nozzle and a static spark earths itself onto the fuel filler, igniting the fuel vapour*. You should touch the pump first to earth yourself before reaching for the nozzle.

First thing we do in the UK when we go to a pump is touch the metal nozzle with it in the holster and earth ourselves. Then it's set up so we can't let go of the nozzle again until we're finished fuelling.

Classic here:
https://youtu.be/tuZxFL9cGkI

One with someone filling a fuel can, similar story.
https://youtu.be/1tYO4jvnJHw

Here's a motorcycle one. If you pause at 1-2 seconds, you can see the spilled fuel from the overflow running back along a join in the concrete.
https://youtu.be/k3K7LTCS65U

Here's another bike igniting an fuel overfill.
https://youtu.be/VLuPVoLpNUM

But OP is still talking out of his arse because motorcycle fuel fires start under the bike, not in the tank. You are holding the nozzle the whole time so are earthed and a static charge can't build up. Arguably, you're less likely to overfill standing next to the bike but it'll set your feet on fire before your balls.

*They then panic and pull the nozzle out, making a flamethrower and dripping burning fuel all over the forecourt instead of a small, easily controlled fire in the fuel filler cap.

This is indeed a stark warning. I always fill my bike while I'm sat on it so that I get an actually full tank and consistent level to satisfy my cdo.

But, every single one of the hundreds of times I've done it the bike has exploded in a fiery deathball of flames. Hundreds of times it's killed me.

I wish I'd read this thread when I started riding 22 years ago - I would've saved a fortune on funerals.

If you want to go on a group motorcycle ride-out in Queensland, you're expected to call the police and notify them of when and where you're going to "avoid harrassment".

Effectively, if you haven't, they'll stop all of you.

This is why i stand on my helmet and fill up, this grounds me to the earth and stops any staticisms from becoming generated within the fibres of my skin tissue to prevent a thermite reaction.

its a well known trick passed down hundreds of years!

I think I can safely say that I have never had an ambition to be a manly rebel.

It's never occurred to me *not* to sit on the bike whilst refueling, actually.

Isn't that to do with a butterfly flapping it's wings somewhere and it effecting something on the other side of the world? Wasn't there a film about it?
