I was changing the oil in my car today when I was googling if I should bother changing the filter as I changed it during the last oil change.

Alot of people recommend changing it with the oil every time as filters are pretty cheap. I prefer to do it every other time due to the fact thats what I've been used to plus alot of service manuals still state that you dont need to do it everytime.

What is the general consensus of BCF when it comes to changing the oil/oil filters on their bikes?

Always, for the sake of a £6 filter why not?

Hi

Filter is cheap compared to the oil going in the engine, and as a filter gets clogged the engine will just bypass the filter.

All the best

Change the filter every 2nd oil change.

But change the oil twice as often as scheduled.

So aye but no.

I'm gonna start another poll: Do you think people will ever stop asking this question?

I'm not here that long and this might be the 6th or 7th poll someone started, with the exact same question, since I've joined. And many newcomers just start a thread about it in a wrong section. Thinking

Because it confounds the corporate military-industrial complex. OCD.

I always change the filter with the oil. The HF303 for my motorcycle is £4.62 and that's not even the lowest price on the market. So, why not to change it, since I've got nothing to do while I'm waiting for all the oil to come out of the engine, when I drain the oil.
Plus, changing the oil filter makes me feel like I did everything right, even though the manual basically says the oil to filter change ratio is 2:1 basically. The oil filter holds 0.1L of oil (the manual says), so it feels right to get rid of as much old oil as possible.

TL; DR: Don't be cheap, change the filter, do not start yet another thread concerning this matter.

Oh, did you know you should also change the washer that seals up the sump plug? Discuss... Thinking

EDIT: £3.95 is the lowest price of the HF303 in the country.

If I don't know when the filter was last changed, then I'll change it. Otherwise every other for me. I tend to drop my oil everyone 3k or so on the R1 anyway. New 10p cush washer every time because I'm so flush.

Well let's make this the poll to end all polls. The reason I asked is cause I couldn't get a definitive answer off of google.

The only reason not to change it is all the threads about problems getting them off/putting them in/stopping them leaking.
But there are probably even more about the perils of removing the drain plug...decisions decisions... Thinking

Consider the savings you make by not using a dealership (or should that be 'not getting used by a dealership'?), then err on the side of caution and change the filter every time, you'll still be quids in. Smile

I'd only bother changing the sump washer if the oil falls out of the bottom quicker than it does through the rocker cover gasket/ exhaust/ any other duff seals. Laughing

Well when you put it that way lol it makes alot more sense. I was thinking like is it a bit of a waste but that's nothing in comparison if you got it serviced at the dealers. Idea

Getting them off = buy the tool, it's cheap and everywhere. Also, if you can't get it off, then 2 things might have occurred, over tightening it OR not changing it for a long period of time.

Putting them in =, nah I've got nothing

Stopping them leaking = before you put the filter on, swipe the area on the engine and lube the rubber seal that's on the filter.

IF you run the old, classic filters (not the HF303 style), it's even easier to change them. Wink

Some people are just hopeless. For instance, there is a thread, as we speak, where OP asks if he overfilled his engine. Amusing to read his idea of filling up an engine by pouring in some amount of oil, and checking the glass if it wasn't too much. Because checking the manual, that would say specific amount of oil and pouring that specific amount of oil in, would be too main stream. Clapping

To be fair to the OP of that thread, he wasn't refilling the bike with oil. He was simply topping it up and got some confusing readings.
You are right though about some people being completely hopeless. My step-daughter's boyfriend personifies the word.

Every time or every other time?

Every single time you take the plug off and then put back again.

I don't do that that often to be honest. I always check the washer and if it looks brand new, then I don't see a reason for changing it. After every oil change I start the engine, let it warm up properly in neutral, check for leaks, never had a leak. Then I go for a short ride around, then check again for leaks. Again, never had a leak even after the test ride.

The floor of my garage is dry, so I'd asume it is not losing any oil. Some of the oil gets burned in the engine and/or sprayed into the airbox, of course. Well ,oddly enough, the ZX7R is the first motorcycle I've ever owned that does not burn oil nor sprays it into the airbox, which is odd for a Kawasaki engine. Confused Razz

EDIT: When I drain it, I get the same amount of oil out, that went in.

I have answered every time oil and filter which I always do.

Then I read your post.

Then I read my bike manual.

Apparently Yamaha recommends to change the filter every other time only.

Good to know.

From now on I am not changing every time the filter with the oil.

Because I can and getting out the old filter and getting in the new filter between the hot exaust pipes is major PITA for me.

I always ride the tits out of it before oil change as recomended by the common wisdom Very Happy

Make of that what you want...

My 125 doesn't have a removable filter ... just a strainer gauze that needs a bit of a rinse now and then. I demand a poll category for that!

[Other bikes: Every time. Unless I am utterly skint - why else wouldn't you?]

Hmmm. I might try this. Just for a change.
