 |
|
Hi all,
I have a BMW F800R (2013 model) I ride mainly in traffic. I am intrigued by the Rekluse automatic clutch: https://rekluse.com/faq/.
In summary you still change gears manually, but you can wait at traffic lights in first gear without pulling the clutch or putting in neutral.
Has anyone tried it? Would it need to be declared as a modification to the insurer? Would it need to be somehow declared to the DVLA? Would a new V5 be required?
Thanks a lot! |

2nd, would I purchase it, no, neutral was invented for a reason, only a spastic can't operate a clutch.
*or a disabled... but then I'd have a different bike choice. |
It’s not a matter of ability, but of convenience, especially when most of my riding is, unfortunately, in traffic and I have to stop or slow down to a walking pace every 2 minutes.
Of course it’s a very subjective choice, but let’s please not turn this into a flame on automatic vs manual. |

That's interesting. Does the sole UK distributor even stock the BMW clutch though?
The definitive answers are: ask your insurer, ask the DVLA.
However, I'd go with:
Yes, it's a modification in which your insurance will be interested. Would I tell them? Probably not, since it's not performance related and doesn't make it any easier to steal.
No, it won't change the vehicle category. Would I even contact the DVLA? Definitely not. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I couldn't find the BMW clutch on the UK distributor's website. I contacted them and am awaiting a reply.
What worries me about insurers is that they'll try any excuse not to pay in case of a crash! I wouldn't want my policy invalidated because of this. I guess I'll have to get something in writing from the insurer to be safe. |

Not for the clutch, no. And they aren't cheap.

I'm trying to imagine how. Are scooterists more prone to accidents because of centrifugal clutches?
Have you considered an easy pull clutch?
Feckit, £20 for an eBay knock off, I've just ordered one. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

i had a crf450r that i used for green laning (overkill yes, but was fun ) the clutch on it was on or off type of setup and useless at anything below 10mph. I put a rekluse on it which transformed the bike and was an amazing peice of kit. not sure i would bother on a road bike though.
As for insurance, i wouldnt tell them but thats just me. ____________________ 04 NSR 125(sold) ---- 03 CBR 600rr(sold) ----90 pan euro ST1100 ' ' ----02 CG 125
