This Government petition just popped up on my timeline on Facebook. Seems reasonable to share with everyone here to sign and get a reaction or debate going in Parliament!

Not signing.
Please ffs do NOT draw their attention to even considering comparing motorcycle emissions to cars and taxing them in a similar way.
Motorcycle emissions are actually pretty crappy. The more fun the motorcycle, the worse the emissions.
Please don't make the government tax fun motorcycles more heavily than boring ones, I don't want to ride an NC700.
I for one find it utterly hilareous that I can ride a motorcycle that does over 150mph, is capable of dropping below 30mpg if thrashed and only pay £65 road tax on it. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

Impossibru. Hydocarbons go in, H20 and CO2 and a little bit of other unpleasant stuff comes out.
You can't magically decouple the CO2 out from the fuel in unless... oh, wait.
I'd be OK with a comparison to cars: I'm pretty sure the Tractor is under 100 greenhouses, and the 80mpg+ Enfield surely must be although god knows what other Bombay nasties it's belching out.
And there is actually a threat here. More-or-less flat rate £140 road tax (sod off calling it VED, it's a tax paid to use the roads) for new cars is coming in 2017. But what about bikes? Will it be the same for a 125 as a Rocket?
Weirdly, the best bit of motorcycling journalism about that appears to be coming from an insurer.

Sure, this petition was out of date and unresearched before it was written.
The thrust of it is reasonable, mind, but it's a daft waste of time, as they all are.
If you want it raised in parliament, just contact Steve Baker MP, the chair of the All-Party Parliamentary group for motorcycling and card-carrying MAG member. Do they have cards? I bet they do.
If he's not going to raise the issue, who is? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Road tax is currently based solely on carbon dioxide levels.
Carbon dioxide is not measured in MOT emissions tests.
I'm not agreeing with the system, mind, especially in the light of VW, Renault and the rest that will come to light. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

The “Urban cycle” is a highly artificial test mostly conducted at around 30mph. |

The 'urban' part of the New [sic] European Drive Cycle* is the part from 0 to 800 seconds. Note it is a (brief) maximum of (approx) 30 mph, with it "mostly conducted" at an average some way below this.

Analysing the OP's linked petition:
| Anthony Fuller wrote: | Most [how many?] Mmotorcycles cover a minimal [define "minimal"] annual mileage, have low emissions [as demonstrated, on a per-litre, per kW, per kg or even per-passenger basis, they really do not], they reduce congestion [fair enough] &and do little to damage the roads [assumes VED is linked directly to road maintenance], yet they still have to pay up to £81 tax whilst lots of cars pay Nnil or only £30 [uses "up to" when describing motorcycles and then "as little as" for cars. Cars pay up to £505 "tax" and motorcycles as little as £17]. This is clearly unfair [because waaaah, oppressed minority, it's not fair, reasons] and unreasonable. |
Quite opposite to this selfish demand for tax-free fun, I often regail anyone who'll listen (and plenty who won't) about how I can travel at over 150 mph, get to 60 mph under 4 seconds, bypass traffic and generally (mostly) legally increase dopamine levels for only £59/year VED and £100/year insurance. And all at mid-50s mpg.
Whilst I agree that the current taxation rates are inconsistent and arguably unfair, I'm happy to pay my way and I thinks it's a bargain. ____________________
