FFS, again? It won't happen, they don't care about the petitions, move on.

Not signing.

Please ffs do NOT draw their attention to even considering comparing motorcycle emissions to cars and taxing them in a similar way.

Motorcycle emissions are actually pretty crappy. The more fun the motorcycle, the worse the emissions.

Please don't make the government tax fun motorcycles more heavily than boring ones, I don't want to ride an NC700.

I for one find it utterly hilareous that I can ride a motorcycle that does over 150mph, is capable of dropping below 30mpg if thrashed and only pay £65 road tax on it.

What a load of nonsense.

Already I get abused and harangued by people seemingly jealous that I don't pay road tax for my bicycle. To the point where people actively use their cars as weapons to try to kill me - just to prove a point that "I should not be on the road". What do you think this will do to average Joe's tolerance levels for us filtering, parking cheeky-like and generally getting away with more than the 'cagers'?

A motorcycle generally has a pretty crap record on emissions. For the size of the engine, I (in my infinite capacity as knowledge-in-chief of bullshit statistics) reckon it pops out as much nastiness from it's pipe if not more than your average family crashabout.

We should probably count ourselves luck we've not been whacked with a big stick (Euro 7 is next isn't it?) telling us we have to be able to start the engine with a fart as traffic lights go green.

If they look at the tax rates and decide to apply car rates to motorcycles a new ZX10 would cost £180 a year to tax.

Probably best to just shut up about it yeah?

There's no such thing as road tax, it was abolished in 1937. So they'll look at that and think "yep already done, next!".

You're thinking of Vehicle Excise Duty.

This is a tax on cars, not roads, and it goes straight into the general Treasury fund. Many government agencies have now started calling VED "car tax" but it might be classified as a pollution tax, since it's now based on the size of engine and emissions. Ultra-low emissions vehicles are exempted.

Most motorbike tax would go up if it was done proportionaly on emissions. Even my very frugal 125 would be half of what our family car is. That'd be £90 instead of the current £17. I'm quite happy with the £17. Even my 650 is only £80 and is similar in emissions to the family car.

I'm specifically looking for an '08 2-stroke for when the ultra low emission zone comes into effect in London Laughing

Impossibru. Hydocarbons go in, H20 and CO2 and a little bit of other unpleasant stuff comes out.

You can't magically decouple the CO2 out from the fuel in unless... oh, wait.

I'd be OK with a comparison to cars: I'm pretty sure the Tractor is under 100 greenhouses, and the 80mpg+ Enfield surely must be although god knows what other Bombay nasties it's belching out.

And there is actually a threat here. More-or-less flat rate £140 road tax (sod off calling it VED, it's a tax paid to use the roads) for new cars is coming in 2017. But what about bikes? Will it be the same for a 125 as a Rocket?

Weirdly, the best bit of motorcycling journalism about that appears to be coming from an insurer.

You clearly have no idea of how emissions are actually measured.

The “Urban cycle” is a highly artificial test mostly conducted at around 30mph.

A while back one of the bike mags put a number of bikes through a simulation of it.

Even things like Fireblades were getting 80+ mpg on the “Urban Cycle”. Of course no-one gets 80+ out of a 'blade in the real world, just like no-one really gets 60mpg out of a diesel.

My 1250 Bandit managed more than twice the mpgs of my car during my urban commute. That would imply a CO2 output below 120g/km and a Road Tax of £30 per annum, rather than the actual £81.

My current MT07 manages 3x what the car does – which would put it well into the Zero Tax category if it were taxed the same as a car: On the urban cycle it would be doing around 100mpg.

Make no mistake, with the odd exception, motorcyclists get utterly bummed on tax.

Which is pretty much going to Scotch the emissions argument anyway.

Sure, this petition was out of date and unresearched before it was written.

The thrust of it is reasonable, mind, but it's a daft waste of time, as they all are.

If you want it raised in parliament, just contact Steve Baker MP, the chair of the All-Party Parliamentary group for motorcycling and card-carrying MAG member. Do they have cards? I bet they do.

If he's not going to raise the issue, who is?

Just put my old 2.3 litre petrol Volvo through its annual MOT, yet again this year the car makes zero readable emmisions even though it has 210 k on the clock, that tells me I should be paying No, Zero, Nil, None , Ziltch tax/VED and I have the official government paperwork to prove my car makes Zero emissions, the powers that be assume a lot of shite. IMO the road tax/VED should be based on actual test figures not what some Tory fecker thinks the figures might be, I must bugger around with the injection system to get those nasty pollutants up to government standards.

Road tax is currently based solely on carbon dioxide levels.

Carbon dioxide is not measured in MOT emissions tests.

I'm not agreeing with the system, mind, especially in the light of VW, Renault and the rest that will come to light.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/dd/New_European_Driving_Cycle.svg/600px-New_European_Driving_Cycle.svg.png

The 'urban' part of the New [sic] European Drive Cycle* is the part from 0 to 800 seconds. Note it is a (brief) maximum of (approx) 30 mph, with it "mostly conducted" at an average some way below this.

* last updated in 1997.

Analysing the OP's linked petition:

Anthony Fuller wrote:
Most [how many?] Mmotorcycles cover a minimal [define "minimal"] annual mileage, have low emissions [as demonstrated, on a per-litre, per kW, per kg or even per-passenger basis, they really do not], they reduce congestion [fair enough] &and do little to damage the roads [assumes VED is linked directly to road maintenance], yet they still have to pay up to £81 tax whilst lots of cars pay Nnil or only £30 [uses "up to" when describing motorcycles and then "as little as" for cars. Cars pay up to £505 "tax" and motorcycles as little as £17]. This is clearly unfair [because waaaah, oppressed minority, it's not fair, reasons] and unreasonable.

Quite opposite to this selfish demand for tax-free fun, I often regail anyone who'll listen (and plenty who won't) about how I can travel at over 150 mph, get to 60 mph under 4 seconds, bypass traffic and generally (mostly) legally increase dopamine levels for only £59/year VED and £100/year insurance. And all at mid-50s mpg.

Whilst I agree that the current taxation rates are inconsistent and arguably unfair, I'm happy to pay my way and I thinks it's a bargain.

I assume you mean Labour government standards...

Labour were in power 97-2010 but yet the Tories were the ones who decided to test emissions to categorise RFL ??
And while I'm at it Labour brought in SORNS as well. The true party of the motorist eh...?
If you're going to slag off the Tories, then coming from a factual standpoint might put some clothes on
your argument instead of suggesting instead that you are just another one of those who blames the Tories for all their
problems. Including those are costing you money which in FACT the treasonous Labour party are responsible for
implementing. Don't let facts get in the way of a good old lefty rant though eh. Thumbs Up

Technically,CO2 is measured as it is used to calculate the Lambda reading.

No, I meant the Tories, they were in power in 1991 when the emissions test was introduced.

I thought this was done by measuring oxygen levels? Eh?

Or, more technically, the difference in oxygen levels between exhaust and atmosphere.
