Dads bike stolen...uninsured...next move?

The insurance ran out about a month or 2 ago and since he hasn't had time to ride it much in the last year, he hadn't gotten round to renewing his policy yet...

We woke up today and seen it gone. A big heavy Ninja with front and back wheel disk locks, attached to the wall...just gone.

Really pissed off as he was thinking of selling it because of inactivity.

Is there any hope?

Look around all of the local housing estates and industrial estates.

Typically bikes are nicked for two reasons - joyriding, or selling. Typically small and off-road bikes are stolen for joyriding, they are then found crashed/burnt out near some woods or a park. Shinier bikes are stolen for selling - either whole, overseas, or as parts.

Bikes stolen to sell have to be taken back to a secure lock-up for storage or dismantling before the next stage. This lock-up will usually contain several bikes, so the theives want to protect its location. Therefore, stolen bikes are typically dumped not far from where they were nicked for a week or so prior to moving on in case they have a tracker.

So get on your bike and poke around all of the side streets on your local estates. Bikes are generally left on the street in plain view. Call the police first and report it, and if you find it call the police before touching it.

It's not unusual for them to have just quietly wheeled it a short distance and hidden it to recover later with a van.
If you didn't know the bike it would look like it broke down and was being recovered.
In town they seem to favour pushing it with a second bike and foot on the pillion pegs and could soon get it out of sight some distance away.

From time to time a stash of stolen bikes is recovered - so you obviously want to report it ASAP.

Is he positive it is not insured? Mine automatically renews unless I tell them otherwise 7 days prior to it running out.

Sorry to hear this.

In addition to the above, I trust that (if the insurance didn't renew and how joyful it would be if it had) he SORNed it. I'd hate to see him getting a blackmail demand from DVLA for a stolen bike. Sad

Go hunting now. I found mine less than half a mile from home. The thief had managed to cut themselves and bled on my exhaust, DNA secured a conviction. If it rains, any DNA/fingerprint evidence will vanish.

No guarantee you'll find it by looking, but if you don't look I can guarantee that you wont!

If the locks were cut off and left where the bike was I would go looking, if the bike was lifted away (so no disc locks cut off onsite) then it'll be long gone in a van.

Bin men.

Make a poster with a good pic of the bike and the number plate writte large and clearly buy a fuckload of doughnuts, and go to your local depot with 20 copies. Ask nicely for them to put one in each cab, and they might look out for it.

Bin men go everywhere. EVERYWHERE.

We went to the local taxi drivers when my nephew's bike was stolen, offered a small reward and within 4 hours we had a location, within five hours we had a name, within six hours we had his bike back and a mother crying for her son's future safety.
