I was watching Fred Dibnah programme on steam power on one of the fringe channels last night.
He did a tour of the Royal Yacht, the engineroom on there is something to die for.

I spent all my working years on steam powered tankers, the enginerooms didn't look like that.
I would love a steam powered narrow boat but they are rocking horse poo with prices to match.
Does anyone else on here play with steam power, heritage railways and the like or am I just a dinosaur ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |

I made that, well a little bit of the Ffestiniog railway!
Back in the 70's my Dad was a member of the Ffestiniog railway society and my parents had a small holiday cottage in Ffestiniog.
Every school holiday we would go to Ffestiniog and "work" on the railway.
At the time the railway terminated well short of Ffestiniog, but was being extended.
Basically our job was breaking rocks in the hot sun, when it wasn't raining!
My Dad, my brother, (10), and myself, (13), would turn up, we were issued with a hard hats, a pick axe and a sledge hammer.
Two blokes would disappear down the track, explosives in hand, and blast some rock away at the end of the cutting.
There were no JCB's, so it was your job to load the rocks into a tipper truck, any rocks that were too big to lift had to be broken up with a sledge hammer and spike. Once full, the tipper truck had to be pushed to the end of the track and the spoil tipped out at the end, to build up the new embankment.
It sounds like slave labour but it was fun!
The first time the, inevitable, back to school, "What did you do in the summer holidays" essay question, came up, I answered truthfully, I got told off for making stuff up! After that I just made stuff up!
You can't even contemplate the elf 'n' saftee drama all that would inspire these days, which ties in rather well with the "Art of being manly" thread! ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

Cool photo - I can feel the heat from here. My old man would have looked at that photo then probably talked for an hour about what he sees in it. He built platforms, laid miles of track, machined bits for engines, trained drivers - he lived and breathed steam engines. When he was cremated they laid on a special train and his ashes were shovelled into the firebox - by a guy that he had taught to drive.
He wouldn't use a metric spanner (called them sillimeters) so when his bike needed work I would have to go and fix it for him. His bikes were always rolling wrecks but an engine wanted for nothing, he would spend his last penny to buy a part or a slab of PB1 to make something from. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
