PostPosted: 17:36 - 27 Jan 2016    Post subject: Sv650 starter relay buzzing Reply with quote

My sv650 has suddenly stopped working. When I hit the starter there is a buzz from the Starter relay.
I have replaced the relay, checked both fuses. All ok.
Still when I push the button it buzzes. I've pulled the two wires from the starter itself and cleaned as best I can. But still nowt.
There is good power from the New(nov2015) battery. I have also charged it up just in case.
There is power going into the relay, but nothing coming out. I guess this is because the bike is not turning over to complete the circuit.
I have tapped the starter itself on the hope of loosening up bushes.
Is it a new starter job or have I missed something.
Your help as always is most welcome!

Get a screwdriver and bridge the 2 pins on the starter relay, if the motor turns, then it's not the motor.

Could also check if there is voltage getting to the starter.

Also the starter motor body is the earth to the engine, so could check this too.

Clean your battery terminals.

Try starting from a booster pack / car battery. if you can get to the positive terminal on the starter itself, just touch a small jump lead to that. Make sure the bike is in neutral first though. You'l soon find out where the problem is.

If you bridge the connections with a screwdriver do it on the nuts not the threads as the spark will damage them and make disassembly difficult.
Edit, do not use your best screwdriver as the flash can take a chunk out of it!

Cheers Chaps.
Will give this a go this afternoon.

Once I've checked the wiring is good, If the starter does not turn when i bridge it.....is that the issue.? requires replacement?

Has it got an alarm/immobiliser? These can cause similar symptoms.

The bridging created nothing. There was a spark but no turning over.
Will have the start off and give it/ terminals a good clean. There was a lot of dirt built up as its a naked. No immobiliser/ alarm.

Most likely cause will be the bushes inside the starter motor, open it up and have a look, sometimes you can get a repair kit.

If you do strip the motor, be careful of the o ring when you put it back together.

Update is.....still no starting
There is nothing from the starter motor; but my girlfriend said it only happened after I'd stored a bike chain and lock under the Pilion seat as I was going away for the weekend(obviously never happened as the bike packed up).
So I was doubtful but thought I'd give it a try anyway.
Took the lock and chain out but still nothing EXCEPT:
When I hit the starter now the speedo bounces up to about 70 who pushing the button.
The reg rectifier is back there under the Pilion. Could that be the issue??

Yes, clean the terminals, reconnect/clean the main fuse plug, just in case and I would also clean the starter button, which can also cause buzzing sound and no start (which is a issue of my own motorcycle at the moment).

Check the loom very carefully, you might have damaged something, likely a connector isn't connecting.

But you say bridging the terminals on the relay causes no starter motor joy? Save some time and try jump leads or a booster pack, first to the battery and then direct to the starter motor. Easier to confirm/eliminate starter motor than to go for a phantom wire chase.

Do you still have the starter motor off? If you have a set of jump leads you can connect them to a battery, then put the negative on the body of the starter motor, when you touch the positive to the terminal it should start spinning (if it works).

Other than that I can't remember what's under the seat electronic wise so can't help you there, just check the loom and any connections for damage (if there is a connector and it only came slightly apart, it could have been arcing and cause it to get hot)

Morning all. CAPTAIN DUMBASS HERE.

The culprit in the end.........A DEAD BATTERY.

My new battery wasn't up to spec and my Cheap as Chips (£6.50 for Cod and Chips?! bloody outrageous) charger wasnt up to the job either.
A fresh set of connectors for the battery and a new battery all for 45.00 all fitted and we are ready for all the hail and rain that Cornwall can throw at us!

Moral of the story;
Buy a Decent battery.
Buy a Decent Jump pack/Charger.

Cheers for all your assistance as ever.

Moral of the story is to buy a £5 multimeter and actually use it. Wink
