I use one of these - https://www.sportsdirect.com/karrimor-jura-35-rucksack-792081?colcode=79208103

Holds tons of stuff, feels nice and strong, additional straps to keep it secure onto you mean it wont flap about in high winds, waterproof cover is great and unlike most camping/hiking backpacks, it doesn't go up high enough to foul the back of your helmet.

I use one if these.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B004YLG1P4/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?qid=1453981008&sr=1-9&pi=AC_SX220_SY330_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=boblbee

They certainly protect the laptop ....& your back. Strapping is excellent & comfortable, but the top hits your helmet if you are on a full sports bike.

I use a Karrimor, about fifteen quid from a sports shop, just about takes my huge and heavy Dell Latitude E5530 with loads of space left for sandwiches, waterproofs, tools etc.

They are a lot of money but I have a Boblbee Rucksack it is the bollocks. Mine has been in Daily use for 8ish years now, I've crashed in it several times too. It's showing it's age but perfectly serviceable.

Personally I would not carry all that on my back as others have said.

However if you are feeling flush the Kriega R30 is very, very nice. I have the 20 one.

A better option maybe a really cheap rucksack for your clothes - say a smaller 20l one from sportsdirect and something like a Kriega 20 litre seatpack for your bike. The latter is also waterproof and relatively easy on and off.

I will never wear a rucksack when riding - a colleague of mine has been in a wheelchair for many years after (allegedly/apparently) breaking his back on one.

In the olden days, before topbox, I did use a rucksack but lashed it to the pillion seat tailpack-style using a luggage net and some of that stay-there-y-bastard foam matting stuff.

Or you could get a proper tailpack with the rucksack loops on it.

Or wear a rucksack - your choice but now with added opinion. Wink

I have top-boxes on both my bikes now ( Thumbs Up ) but before that I used one of these.

Air-back so it's not sweaty, and it's lasted really well - I've had mine about 4 years now, 2 years of that on the bike, and it's still going strong.

There are also tail packs like so these which have straps built in to become backpacks when off the bike -

https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/206795

I had one of these which is the same idea, only much cheaper, comes with a waterproof cover - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BikeTEK-Bike-It-Motorbike-Luggage-Bag-Urbano-Tail-Pack-Tour-LUGTAL06-/281476044647?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368. Holds approximately 32 cans of coke.

I think I will go for one of these seems a better idea than wearing a rucksack.

Presumably they're a generic fit for most/all bikes?

Thanks again

Elasticated bungee strap attached to the base of the bag. All you'd need to do is put the bag on the rear seat of your bike and hook the straps to a mounting point on your bike and then put the plastic protection covering to protect your paint work and you're ready to ride away. In some cases (and dependent on how long it actually takes or where you park your bike) you can leave the base attached to the bike while your away with the bag and then just zip it back up upon return and ride away.

Oxford certainly isn't the word brand of luggage to be looking at and would be a sensible first choice IMO (based on build quality of the oxford tank bag I have). They also sell this tailbag, similar and cheaper. Worth putting the pro's and con's of each together and seeing if the extra price is worth it? Just a suggestion as the price point of that bag appears high (to me) for a first time bag although at the same time you have to consider the value of the load it's securing so put your money down wisely.

I would consider playing around with mounting points on your bike with a bungee strap (providing you have one) just to check before ordering that you have mounting points that will suffice. Video here to get an idea before purchase.

Straps under the seat is my personal preference but have no experience of bungee straps so cannot compare.

I have the Knox k-pack, it has served me well for the last couple of years, in all weathers, it has a daylong rain cover when need.

I wouldn't balk at carrying a laptop in a rucksack but bulkier harder items would go into one of various sizes of waterproof stuff/roll-bags under a cargo net. I sold all my seat bags and soft panniers when I discovered these. Ubiquitous is the word.

I wear a rucksack on every ride and I rate the Deuter Futura 28L very highly. All the features you need, a good size for biking, very tough, not too high above the shoulder strap's top mount so it doesn't nudge your head, and the clever back design (key feature) is always comfortable.

Kriega R25. Big enough for laptop and and other bits. Not so big that it's too bulky for everyday use. It's my ideal riding rucksack.

For comparison I've used the Karrimor bags as well as Overboard.
- The Karrimor is ok but not super protective of your expensive laptop. It's a nice cheap option for occasional use.
- Overboard is solid and 100% waterproof but I found it lacked comfort on longer rides. Ideal for short sub-1hour commutes however..

I have one of these, been using it in all conditions for about 5 years now. It's been through hell and back and remains waterproof. Went over the bonnet of a car with my laptop inside and both survived. Very comfy to wear too with a thick padded liner against your back. What I like about it is the inside panel un-zips to give access to the insides without opening the top, so if you have something like a map to keep dry without screwing it up you can un-zip the panel and slip it in flat.

This is the same thing at Amazon but out of stock. If anyone can find one for sale I want to buy another.

I use this too, and I highly rate it. My laptop fits nicely in the sleeve in the backpack.

The harness it uses distributes weight nicely, so I have found that carrying similar weights I have been less fatigued by my Kriega than my old sports-direct backpacks.

Same - I picked up a karrimore from sports direct for about this price. internal pockets for a laptop/macbook, good side pockets, everything zips up, its water resistant and also has key loops inside. Has the chest and waist clips for added security too. Very comfortable.

I have this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281603224116

In fact I have a 20 Litre I bought first, then bought the 30 litre.

It is comfier to wear than a Kriega R30 with the quad lock system, which I also have. The Overboard still has extra horizontal straps but it feels more comfortable (even with a bit of weight in it).

In addition, I had my macbook pro in there, in a hard slip class thing. And a couple of other bits, when a car ran into the left side of me, I bounced off the bonnet, rolled down the road a few times. Everything in there was fine. Crucially, I believe I incurred no further injury because of that (which people are concerned about), in fact I think it helped with my back.

Fully waterproof, mine is only starting to 'hole' at the bottom in the inside because I put too much crap in there loose. Surprised

It also has an inside pocket with a hard liner, handy for a phone/wallet or things you don't want sloshing about with the rest in there.

I do not like the idea of having rucksack strapped on my back. And it is not comfty at all.

And I hate top boxes for two reasons. Not good on motorway speeds. Getting on and off is major PITA.

Hence I use tail pack. The most comfortable solution for me.

Straps nicely on the pillion seat and holds my 15" huge work laptop, clothes, shoes and more. It is 52L. Has huge central central compartment. One separate compartment on each side and three other external pockets. Comes with waterproof bags for each:

https://www.bykebitz.co.uk/motorcycle-luggage/motorcycle-tail-packs/large-motorcycle-tail-packs/jofama-bag.html

It cost £89.

Note good top box with decent max load of 10kg like Givi V47NN Monokey or Maxxia 4, costs around £200 for the box only. Add mounting plates etc and the cost goes easily around £300.

Most low level top boxes say Givi E470N Monolock although big in volume have very low max load around 3kg. Means heavy laptop plus chargers and other stuff are not save in it because you will overload it.

That does look like a decent solution.

Depends on the bike though, and OP didn't say. An effizienteMotorrad has mounts for a box built right on top the subframe and a big £40 No-Brand(tm) box will hold as much weight as you care to sling in there.
