When I ACF'd my iron horse in Decemeber I scraped the worst of the shite off with a couple of bits of plastic.
Like so.

I then washed it with a bucket of hot soapy fairy liquid lemon and 20p sponge before giving it a coating of ACF50.

Jizer, Gunk. Muc Off also do a degreaser spray. WD40 works too, sprayed on a rag and wiped over. Not sure what any of those are like on painted bodywork though.
Inb4 Fairy Liquid contains ...oops, beat me to it . ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I picked up 5 litres of WD-40 in B&Q of all places for ~£25. They also had decent shop towels for eBay-equivalent prices. You won't find this stuff on their web site, but have a poke around and you can sometimes find dusty boxes of goodies at the bottom of the stacks. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I tried neat autosmart triple citrus degreaser yesterday and it didn't touch it.. |
You soak the dirt with something (WD40, white spirit, diesel, paraffin) and need to scrape the dirt with some wooden or plastic scrapper. I use wooden kitchen spatula from Tesco.
I use WD40, paraffin from B&Q: https://www.diy.com/departments/bq-paraffin-4l/257116_BQ.prd
I have cleaned parts and dirt with diesel too. It is more or less the same as kerosene only paraffin content is slightly different. And diesel is cheapest.
You can't remove heavy dirt just by spraying it. Elbow grease is required.
Put some cardboard or big plastic bag under the bike to collect the dirt. ____________________ Adrian Monk: Unless I'm wrong, which, you know, I'm not...
