Have a wiggle ar the rear hub bearings. There is over £200 worth of bearings in there.
Make sure the chain adjuster isn't seized (either in the swingarm or to the bake plate).
They have a flexible PCB backed dash. It's prone to corrosion/failure of the wiring tracks. Any malfunctioning gauges or lights should be viewed with suspicion.
Reg-recs go pop. Usually every 16k miles unless they have been replaced with a different one (most will have).
Clutches rattle after some miles for no readily discernable reason.
Starter clutch rollers can start to slip. Squeals on startup. Not a big deal, rebuild kits are available.
Have a look at the solid, chromed steel oil pipes running up to the oil cooler for corrosion.
Radiators are very expensive to replace.
Check the tags where the fairing side pieces locate into the nose piece. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

This. I had a '92 VFR750 (in 2008-9). I had a reg-rec go shortly after I bought it, causing extensive damage to the harness (i.e. burned out connectors). Big job to fix, fortunately under dealer Warranty.
Aside from that, I thought it was a great bike at the time, but I wouldn't own one now. They're too old, too complicated for easy home maintenance, and not that brilliant. I bought a VFR800Fi some years later because I remembered the 750 fondly, but it was a big let down really. It felt tired, heavy and dull. But by that time I knew better.
There are better, simpler and equally practical bikes. At a similar budget, I'd choose a tidy VTR1000 Firestorm any day.

Had my 97 FV for nearly a year now, It has the CPU fan jerry-rigged to it. mine's been dropped umpteen times by previous owners but is low mileage for the age and runs like a dream.
Mine's developed a random non-start issue that i'm yet to diagnose - not the reg/rec as far as I can tell, tis difficult to start in cold weather, all of them are getting a bit long in the tooth and need TLC, but otherwise its a lovely thing, easy to ride, makes a great noise and is good at long trips. Mine's got the GBMoto bar raisers fitted which help.
Replacement Fairings are expensive so try not to drop it like I did!

Anyway I'm now at a stage where I'm making enough disposable income to be able to save quite a bit and finally get myself my dream bike.
I just want to know what are the usual things to look out for when buying one of these. I know replacement stainless downpipes would be a bonus, also the rear shock on higher mileage machines is likely to be shagged. What else should I be checking for when viewing bikes? Also does a budget of about 2k seem realistic?
Thanks all. |
I bought a '91 VFR in December, but haven't collected it from the dealer yet - it's too fine for salty roads
It was my choice because they seem to be great for both commuting and touring - and parts are plenty. Secondly, it has the same heritage as my first bike, the NTV 650 with similar steering geometry, single sided swing arm and a torquey V-engine. Fairings and greater power is a big plus for me, and it's a good looking bike.
Common issues have been mentioned, and it is easy to find a nice one if you know what to look for. Replacement fairings are pretty expensive, so I am considering to use crash bongs the first few months of getting used to it. ____________________ Past: '91 Honda NTV650, '93 Kawasaki GPZ 500S
