xj 600s Gear problem

Hi All

I have a xj 600s L reg 1993 and just recently it is very hard to get into gear sometimes I have to let the clutch out a bit and it will go into gear then but I have trouble shifting up and down.

I know they suffer with clutch rattle which mine has

I have also noticed when on its stand and I put it into gear and let the clutch out it is ok but when I pull it in the back wheel stops as though the back brake has been applied
Also there is a squealing noise when I operate the clutch coming from the clutch side of the bike could it be the clutch plates are worn ????

it stops the drive to the rear wheel when you pull the clutch in?

Simple bits

Adjust clutch cable
Is oil clean and at the upper level mark?
Is the gear leaver and linkage moving freely?

Has the bike been standing unused fro more than a week ?

If it stops abruptly (on the stand) when the clutch is pulled in then it sounds like one of your problems is a binding rear brake.

Try selecting the gears by hand without the engine running. You'll need to get the back wheel off the ground and move it backwards and forwards. To recap - left hand on gear lever, right hand moving the back wheel forwards and backwards. If the selectors are OK, you should be able to get through the gears without too much difficulty and, if you can, it's the clutch at fault.

As above, you need to work out why the back wheel is sticking though. Most likely it's the brake binding and the calliper needs cleaning up/freeing off but it can also be a damaged wheel bearing or incorrectly assembled rear axle assy.
