On the way to work today and I lost all power. Pulled over the the side of the road and the chain had come off. Another biker who was passing pulled over and helped me reattach the chain, tighten it and run it. It would run but then there would be a crack, and the chain was loose. Checked the front sprocket, and it is as its meant to be, tightened the chain again, ran it and it seemed ok. Went maybe 50 metres and the chain came off again. This time, checked both sprockets, realigned the tire, checked for split links (none) and it seemed ok. About half a mile later, there is a click coming from the left hand side. Chain is still quite tight, but I was concerned that if it was clicking like it was, it might cause more damage. Took it home, and set off to work in the car.

What should I be checking / doing next? Booked tomorrow off to get this sorted, so should i just go and get new chain and sprockets? Is there something that I should check before spending more money?

Cheers in advance.

Might help - might not...

I had a chain off on my YBR when the sprocket carrier bearing let go... It wasn't immediately obvious but the sprocket had a bit of play in it that meant the chain just spun off under any sort of load.

Check the rear sprocket is secure and there's no play anywhere. Assuming that the front sprocket is secure and where it should be?

Lift the rear off the ground and slowly-ish spin the back wheel.

If the chain under the swing rises and falls then you have a tight spot in the chain.
This is where one part of the chain hasn't stretched equally with the rest of it.

New chain time.

Sounds like CaNsA has got it, I noticed when I was letting it spin in 1st on the centre stand there was a little bit of movement, and any acceleration caused a "jump". Gonna check the sprocket carrier as well, but I reckon that I might as well replace the sprockets and chain anyways. Because it is left outside and I haven't kept it as lubed as I could do, I might as well do it and keep an eye on it.

Cheers lads. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Oh, and a massive thumbs up to the dude who stopped and helped for over an hour because I didn't have any tools with me. Don't know if he is a BCF'er, but yeah, meant a lot. Cheers, YBR rider.

FFS. Been and bought a new sprocket and chain set, but ended up with the wrong sprockets (they don't even fit onto the bike). The old sprockets looked in decent condition, so put them back on, replaced the chain and everything is sound.

Except...

The rear tyre is now out of alignment, leaning to the right. Not sure how to remedy this, anyone got any tips?

Download the user manual for your bike, it should contain instructions for wheel alignment. Precise details will vary from model to model. It's usually dead easy.

Sprocket carrier is fine upon inspection, it turned out that one of the links had cracked.

Look at the rear axel and the swingarm.
There should be markers.
Make sure boths ends of the axel is the same distance from the back of the swingarm.
