Hi guys

Binned my bandit 2009 650 k8. Fairly low speed, but I lost front end and control and accelerated before hitting the bump (sideways-can't remember Shocked ) which enhanced the impact .....

There is a fair amount of cosmetic damage which I've listed at the end if you so wish to read, otherwise, need help with mechanical aspect of the damage

Main cause of concern
LHS generator cover has been half obliterated.... the coils on inside are slightly damaged. Stator's ring has one section protruding more than the rest....

Apart from the fairings and tank, i didnt think there was some serious damage... so my course of action went as follows;

I deserted the bike as I thought I could replace the generator cover, top engine oil up and ride it home ... Lo and behold; When i get the cover next day and top up the oil; It starts leaking at the bottom. Initially I thought it was the gasket, when I had a closer look, the engine block had a crack!!!! i dont know how serious this is or weather I should panic (its doesn't look big but as soon as i saw its the engine block, i just stood up and not looked at it again Crying or Very sad -one minute silence please).... Crying or Very sad

Then I thought; its not leaking much so decided to attempt starting it and it comes with error code: F1. I went into dealer mode and C12 (Crankshaft position sensor error) was on dash. The starter turns but nothing is kicking (firing) - Dont want to bump incase something else breaks

Back to the title: help / advice please. Is the engine block damage fixable and how. And what causing the error, Kind of asking the obvious but is it something inside inside or just the thing hanging with the stator or the stator itself?

Since I couldn't start it and decided to call local recovery van (off gumtree). Waited from 4:45 till 8:20 and the guy turns around and cant make it Evil or Very Mad !!! so bike is not home so no pictures atm....

Here is the damage list to the bike;
Front faring scraped ...
Handle bar bent (RHS seriously bent)
Accelerator handle out of place (moving on handle bar aswell as cut out switch)
Left clutch lever snapped in half...
Exhaust has dents and scrapes but not major ...
RHS rear footpeg snapped out of place
Rear fairing has scraped.
Top box holder broken a bit (haven't had a good look yet)
Tank dented and scraped

Cracked engine block? If it is a crack and not a casting mark you never noticed, it's toast.

Sounds like you proper smashed this one.

Bars and pegs are sortable. Plastics are kind of optional. Check nothing behind plastics further fucked. Ebay an engine. Of course that assumes you've not bend the frame.

Injury was just road rash on hand an bit of soft tissue back and leg. Was going around campus fairly low speed like I said so didn't bother with gloves. Had everything else on. The university speed limit is 15 and some students have "apparently" witnessed I was coming fast (relative to them? - I don't know. .).. I'll contact solicitor to see if any damages can be recovered due to the stone that caused the loss of front end (was by a small roadwork taking place.....)

There was no third party involved... or property damage. Security came and took details and some guys "reps of the uni" came took pics and tried to measure distance bike went to calculate my speed lol. However this, I believe, isn't an accurate measure of speed since there was a loss of control and hence acceleration. Also the bike was moved further and off the road before they arrived and there wasn't much if any sign of where bike stopped. the security allowed me to park on campus claiming it's safe ....

Need I inform insurance ? It's only 3rd party fire and theft

I'll try get pics by evening but when the cover was off, the bit spinning around the stator was bent in very slightly but didn't look that damaged. It's probably just the stator protruding which are causing error but ill get pics up by ASAP.

If road surface was unsound due to roadworks then contact someone good and claim. As uni people were measuring they already know you're going to. Do you have photos of the scene? Do they?

It may be argued that you were acting irresponsibly by not wearing appropriate equipment, but you are not legally required to do so. You may be able to claim personal injury as well. a small settlement is cheaper than fighting it and may be for more than the damage to the bike.

I've got pics of the engine block crack and roadwork where the front slid. I've also taken pics when I went to collect bike yesterday (recovery to friends garage) the road has quite a bit of debris , more than the day o accident.

Unfortunately I can't add pics direct from phone have yet. Will do when I get home

Slowed down for the bump, front went light and went to the left (cant remember if it wobbled or not) hand came off the break and accelerated. This caused whole body to move back as was unexpected and kept accelerating, hit the bump hard and then I'm not sure what happened to the bike but I fell off, rolled once or twice and stood up like an action movie hero ...and bike had slid one side, then don't know how it turned to the other side... happened quick .... walked over to the bike and was helped by a student to move it to the kind of layby... but u can see part of the mark where bike slid.... it stopped before the layby thing so didnt go far ....

Swap out the engine, its the cheapest option.

Going off this account, there's no-one to blame or claim against.

You sould be able to get that case repaired, just make sure whoever you get to do it knows what they are doing. Going by work I've had done in the past, I'd guess it'll cost about £100 to £150 with a professional firm, depending on what has to be taken off the engine to do it. The crack doesn't appear to be over any crank journal bolts....which is good Thumbs Up
Stator will need replacing fer sure.......£20 second hand.

Any recommends for the repair around Birmingham? And the stator is coming around £70 unless i'm looking at the wrong thing?

Also will the thing around the stator need replacing aswell? if you look closely, its got dints ... and very slightly bent.....

Engine costs around 300. How much is labour? or how big of a project is it?
