Street triple vs mt-09... Talk to me

Styling aside, I've been told both triple engines are very similar. Does one trump the other in other areas? Size wise is one taller and stockier?

The Street Triple is built better than the MT09. The suspension on the Street Triple is much better than the MT09 - the R is another level up again. In terms of riding position, the MT09 is almost like a supermoto, very forward and upright, the Street Triple is like a traditional sporty naked - the facelift model is more aggressive due to lower bars. MT09 has a very minimalist dash, Street Triples is much better. The Street Triple also looks better (IMO) and does better on fuel. Louder induction noise too. I think that as a ride the Street Triple feels more planted and confidence inspiring.

The Street Triple feels wider and like there's more bike under you because you sit further back, so you peripherally see more of it (sitting in the bike vs on it). The suspension setup on the MT09 means that the Street Triple will feel taller due to it not going down as much under load.

Basically, buy a Street Triple.

Ha nice one for that. I do favour the street but saw you get a newer Yamaha for the same money and the looks are growing on me so wondered if it's worth it.

Seen a round lamp low miles for the same price as a bug eye R model high miles, both at the same price. Decisions decisions.

I do think that you're paying more for the better bike. The MT09 is a good bike, the Street Triple is a great bike. The difference in build quality is apparent in person and I would happily take a few year older Street in place of an MT09.

What's the budget? I got my 2009 R for £4.3k with 6k miles and it was immaculate.

It's growing by the day but both are 4.4k. Older is 2010 6k with Arrows. Newer is R 2011 17k but they said they would full service with valve clearance l.

Did sit on the xsr900 at the show today which has the 09 engine. Much better riding position but too new for me. Prefer something more up right and larger between the legs being quite tall. Really liked the size and seating position of the rs1200r that the dad in law is looking at... Again, well out of my price range tho!

Budget suspension vs budget security

Not too fussed about budget security because secure work parking and out of sight home storage with Datatool alarm, mucho locks and beeps.
Can't see the MT09 being the chuck-a-bout bike the Street Triple is.

Ive got an MT-09, it had the throttle issue which made me sad due to the death factor if i dared to think about moving my wrist (newbie). I got the remap which smoothed it out for me but the bike is still stupid fast, just nicer delivery. Other bikes may be better but this was the more affordable option for a new bike for me. Everything else is amazing about it (again, i may be biased cos its my only bike).

Motorwise. On paper and on the typical country road the MT takes the prize. Yes, I would agree the stock suspension on a MT needs tweaking but for the average rider you can adjust most of it out. The Triple has better suspension out of the box I agree.

Looks are VERY different and subjective anyway. The STR has always been the original old school naked bike and when people come to think of naked bikes they think of one. The MT is a bit out there and different but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think the frame on the MT is a piece of art.

Like always, if I was in the market for either I would test ride both for a couple of hours and make a decision there.

N.B I've rode both and bought the Yamaha.

It's just finding somewhere to give me a test ride is the issue, I've asked 3 places and all said no. The place with the st I have my eye on says they don't offer rides as they give warranty.. Erm that's not the main reason why I want to ride it! I wanna know of that nose cone directs wind at my head as I'm quite tall.. The screen on my hornet did so I took it off.

That's strange. I know of some local to me that would, although you aren't close. May be worth the 1 or 2 hour ride on a nice day to find out.

Not sure where you are but Triumph dealers are usually good on test rides.

I have the Street Triple and bought another despite having a gearbox failure on the first one. This time I got the R.

I prefer the looks of the STR and I think the prices you have been quoted are good, well, better than I found about 3 weeks ago.

I like the bug look better but apparently the current version is slightly better - I dont know.

I like the look of the STR frame as its more old school ish, if that makes sense.

I think both are great so buy with the heart, I did as the sensible choice for me would have been a Honda Hornet. Saying this, I think I overspent so mine maybe up for sale soon.

I spoke to the Woburn branch and he said "if you're serious I can prepare it for you". Even if I like the ride I have no intention of buying that actual bike though so don't know what sort of commitment they're after!?

I wouldn't buy either bike without a test ride, as I expect they will feel very different and have nothing in common except 3pots in line.

My local Yam dealer has suggested me to take out the MT-09 a few times to see what I think, but Im not really interested in new bikes. They are getting in some new demo's this month including the XSR900 etc. Any dealer that expects commitment to the level of agreeing a price or deal first is not worth a second of your time.

As for the bikes, I'm a wanker talking with no experience, but the MT-09 looks quite poorly finished in places, and I think the 07 is a better looking and better put together bike, which looks more fun too.

On that basis alone I'm out and would be heading to a Triumph dealer to see this mythical machine that's taken everyones heart and made such a cult legend. All that, combined with I would expect better build quality should help residual values stay well ahead of the Yamaha second hand, if that's the sort of thing that bother's you that is?

Didn't think about the tax thing. That's all good for an mt09 as the demonstrators would be a similar age of bike I could afford but for the triumph I would only get a 4-5yr old one so not as much chance of having a demonstrator and don't know how similar the models are.

I took both 2015 models out for a test ride and this is my 2p

STR - Easy ride, comfortable. Bit bland, thought it lacked power. Would be a good commuter bike but it lacks grin factor.

MT09 - Sensitive throttle, although it's not that bad and can be made better with mods. Much more grin factor and power wheelies.

Overall I'd choose a MT09 as it sounds nicer and the ride is much more fun.

How would both fair on a long weekend tour. I know theres not really any protection from wind but seating position & comfort factor on long rides?

Once I get mine back you are welcome to an extended test ride of a few weeks if you want. I'm only round the M25 and down the M2. I won't be riding it till June anyway so have at it. You may get bored and fancy a faster bike.
