Posted: 16:07 - 12 Feb 2016 Post subject: Trouble with oil/ oil level glass |
 |
|
Hi everyone.
I am owner of Kawasaki Eliminator 125 ( 2007) , just couple of months in bikes, and lovin it, until trouble has arrived.
I recently checked my oil level, and it was not showing in glass window at all. So I bought new oil to add some, I ended up to add 1 L of oil to it. Level of oil still did not show ( bike was in vertical, also tilting bike on my self, there was no result). As glass is quite white decided maybe ts dirty, foged and oil just not showing through, so I have overfilled it. I spilled all oil out, and it came out only 1.3 L of it.
When I bought bike 3-4 moths back, Oil was between min/max. I have droven now for 600 miles, nearly 1000km, is it actualy posible that bike has "ate" more than 1L oil during 3-4 months, 600 miles? ( Did not found any leakage of oil anywere)
As I still dont know, if oil glass window is ok, I want to clean inside ( any sugustions what best for that?) and change oil, oil filter and see if it helps.
Plus any idea how big a damage I have done for engine, with driving nearly without oil? Lately I have used it only for short 20-30 min rides to work and back.
p.s. as I am new to bikes, and hope I have not created too big damage, as till this everything has worked fine and still does, but for now wont use it until figure out/ solve the problem.
p.s.s. later Ill ad picture with oil window.
Please advice, Martins |

So short trips on a bike and a white oil window..
Emulsification...
Drain the oil out and fill with fresh. The amount you need to put in is usually stamped on the crankcase.
Might be as well to change filter as well at the same time. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

Thanks for advice,
here is picture of glass

Lower brown line is not oil level, it stays like that no matter of how bike stands.
Before I forgot to mention, its got only 7.7k on clock.
I will change oil / oil filter, on side it shows 1.4 L, but is that just to reach min/max, or together with oil in system?
Also should window clear, if Ill take it for longer drive?

A leak, but you notice leaks.
Piston rings worn
Barrel scored
Valve guides gone potato.
If there is not a pool of oil it will be one of the last three and you will need to do a top end strip to determine what has gone wrong. |
Is it still safe to take it for a ride, as now I know there is problem with oil, and can follow, how fast oil is leaveing.
And leave striping for couple weeks later? |

Offft
I'd say the head gasket has gone.
Sometimes the window can get a bit misty if you do a lot of short trips but that photo tells me you have oil and coolant mixing. A head gasket failure is the most common cause.
Stop using it |

Seems to have a roller crank so if it's not making nasty noises or the noise hasn't changed suddenly there should be no damage.
You can clean out that window easily enough. Buy a new gasket before you start. Drain the oil out and un-do all the bolts around that cover. Remove the cover and you'll see the oil window from the inside. Get a can of brake cleaner and blast all the creamy emulsion out with the straw that comes in the can.
Now clean up the gasket faces, replace the cover and re-fill with oil.
Definitely, change the oil and filter. Keep an eye on the level every week at least. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

My oil-cooled bike doesn't suffer this and it's outside 24/7 in all weathers. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Possibly, but my point was it's not a problem caused by not keeping a bike in the garage. In fact, the air in a typical garage will be as moist as the air outside. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Thank you for advice and help to everyone, sadly my trouble have not finished..
I today finally received oil/ oil filter by mail. I have drained oil, removed oil filter, to notice that O ring on oil filter cover is severely damaged and not of use.
On internet for different model motorcycles oil filters come together with new O ring + new O ring for oil filler plug , but not mine (Kawasaki eliminator bn 125, 2007). I can’t find any replacements on internet. Is it possible to replace with random same size rubber O ring?
Also I just find out that my oil filler plug is without O ring, is it possible, that is the reason of large lose of oil is because of that(~ 1L on nearly 1000 km?)?
As I mentioned before, I never noticed any pool of oil, but is it possible that leakage was small enough that oil did not drop, but stayed on under parts of motorcycle?
