I had to take the exhaust manifold off a Bultaco Sherpa 350 today. It was held on by nuts on four 5mm studs. I used the correct sized socket and applied steady pressure and undid all four nuts without snapping off a stud, rounding a nut or pulling a thread out of the head. Is this a first?

I am not happy with the oil I drained from the gearbox, very little of it and it seems to be contaminated with .....Gearbox.

Should have used a cheap shifter, that would have rounded the nuts off nicely.

Rusty as an old horse shoe, I fully expected them to give me grief and I was at the edge of applying pressure before I went plan B when they yealded. I will of course clean up the threads, use new nuts and apply copper grease when I rebuild.

I remember trying to take the exhaust off of my GS500. After much struggling, my dad and I looked at each other and said that it shouldn't be so difficult.

We took an alan key to the bolts for the exhaust on his garage-bound XS750 that hasn't been started for at least 15 years. They moved effortlessly!

Both my 250 Sherpa and my 250 Pursang gave me no issues in that department, so much so that it didn`t even occur to me that it should of been a possible problem.
Could it be to do with all that two-stroke oil around these areas?

Slightly on topic: I've seen yourself and others mention the brass nut alternative a few times.
With brass being softer than the original metal, would that also mean that any torque settings would also need to be reduced in kind?
(Yes I am too Gorilla handed to operate sans Torque Wrench)

No as the real load is on the stud not the nut.
