Wheel bearing - spacer 'held' between inner races

So I've just been changing my wheel bearings.

Old ones came out a treat, took them apart to use as drivers. New bearings seated nicely with the hot/cold treatment.....

Now the centre spacer tube is held between the two inner races rather than being semi-loose, to the degree where you turn one inner race and the other one turns too....

Not sure how this has happened, replacement bearings are good NTN ones and surely tube would have also touched old OE bearings too??

Is is likely to be safe to run like this? The whole point of the spacer tube is to lock the whole lot up solid one the spindle nut is tight anyway.

Should be fine, I've had this on car hubs before.

Having the spacer held tight makes it easier to slide the axle through, too

Could have been movement of the spacer before due to wear on the bearings.

Well the wheel spins nicely in the bike and seems to be ok.

It would be a really retarded design to make the spacer too long for the flanges, to the point where you didn't bottom out each bearing on the flange in the hub.

Shop manual seems to show both bearings being wound down on the flanges.

This is normal. If it didn't happen you would be pre-loading the bearings when you tightened the axle.
