Hello there bikers.

CBR600F2/CBR600FN
I had a mishap in which at a busy supermarket, I returned to my motorbike, in a bit of a hurry.

turned the engine on to warm her up but neglected to remove the front disc lock.

visor down, quick blip of the throttle, both legs straight up, off we go.....for about 1 metre.

oops, front wheel locked, down i went lol. thankfully my tinted visor saved me from being identified haha.

So here we go,

I broke the RH calliper bracket on my CBR 600F2.

I think the disc is ok, as the bracket broke before any warping of the dics happened.

I need to source a new bracket....but im having trouble finding somewhere that has it.
I would like to order the part myself and fit it to save the labour, and if needs be get it checked by a local mobile mechanic before setting off on it again.

So does anyone know a good place to get old bike parts, or where do you guys get parts if you need 'em.
I checked ebay but its a bit hit or miss there, and I got a quote from a store of £120 for part only...is that reasonable for just a bracket?

Sorry its a long post...if you read this far then thank you and good luck out there.

Regards,

Ultinator Very Happy

Also would it be easier to just get an entire replacement calliper?
I dont want to complicate anything uneceesarily.

Also what do you think a CBR600FN (1992) is worth ?
It is pretty good condition has 18,000 beans on the clock and starts everytime....

One of these?

https://i.imgur.com/pZhvajk.jpg

If it is, then you now also have the manufacturer part number (45210ML0006 ). If not, have a look at their exploded part diagrams and find the bit you've broken. You can get it from a european parts specialist:

https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cbr600f-hurricane-1993-p-england-kph_model2278/bracket-comp_45210ml0006/#.VsxQyMdYXdk

for 92 euros.

Other option is to contact your local bike breakers - they will have plenty of CBR600F2's around as they were v. popular.

If you want to stick online - then set up an eBay follow search for it.

Has a disc lock ever prevented a theft or just exclusively caused damage when not removed? Smile

Maybe get an alarmed one?

If it's the part Bridgehouse posted a picture of, it is usually supplied as part of the calliper by breakers when you buy used parts.

On the plus side, if your actual calliper is ok, you can buy the cheapest one on ebay with seized pistons because the actual carrier/bracket part usually just needs a clean up even if the rest of it is scrap.

Are the lugs on the fork leg ok? Check them carefully with a good light for any small cracks.

HA wow thanks everyone.

That was super fast!

unlike my getaway ha.

I am away in spain for now and bike is wintered in london. I think the fork bolts are ok.. but will check.
Also I think then that a siezed calliper with a good bracket will be the cheapest option. thanks for that suggestion!|

that is the correct part in the image, thanks for sourcing the part ID. I think I can repair this myself.

Yes that disc lock reminder is a must have !!

Also i think disc lock helps sometimes.
My stepfatehr had a CB250 stolen from the driveway on the only night he forgot to lock it all up as it was raining cats and dogs.

found it two days later in a river, they had tried to hot wire it, failed as the petrol tank was switched to off! obviously young theives as pretty much all old bikes without fuel gauges has the reserve and off taps.

I managed to make sense of the wires, shake it around a bit and it sprung to life with a fair bit of kick starting and broken shin action !

So the disc lock stops retards (no offence to actual retards) trying to walk off with my stuff!

Lastly...

If i were to ride around with only the Front Left brake operating....would i expect to run into some major issues?
obviously increased braking distance....
but anything more severe due to uneven loading on the wheel or something more technical?

I ask to query if it is rideable in its current state..

Thanks again

I wouldn't risk it. One of the few areas imo that should be 100% perfect.

Not seen a picture so don't know, but if the caliper isn't on firmly and works loose, or isn't sitting over the disk properly, it will be no different to applying the brake if the wheel was off.. applying the brake is going to push the piston out with each application, and get air in the system, possibly piss fluid out, and.. well.. you can guess the next bit..

Yeah I figured its not a great idea.

The front left calliper is perfect.

the front right isnt mounted or bolted to the frame and makes no contact with the disc in its current state.

It is tethered/zip tied safely out of the way of moving parts....

Thing is when i first broke it, i didnt realise i had broken the calliper... the brake lever broke too.

I rode home without using my front brakes (which was an interesting experience)
but i think if i had been able to use the lever...with a broken calliper bracket...well maybe i wouldnt be here writing this right now...
I did think what a wally for riding it without properly checking - I was just so stressed and frustrated i didnt check

Yes.. but.

If the right hand calliper is still on the bike, you run the risk of it pumping a piston all the way out and totally losing brake pressure.

If you ran a single brake line from the master cylinder to the left hand piston and bled it through, you could ride it like that. If you also took off the right hand brake disc and calliper, it would almost certainly pass an MOT with just one in place.

Historically, several motorcycle manufacturers used the same wheel and forks across the range but only fitted twin callipers to the more expensive bikes.

So yes, you could run it with the left calliper only BUT I would want to have a single brake line connected to it. Leaving the damaged one in the system could cause serious problems.

EDIT: I have seen someone put a piece of wood between the pads of a broken calliper following a similar incident to yours, then cable tie it out of the way as a get-home fix. It worked but the risk of the piece of wood coming out and a piston being pumped all the way out was real.
