Bought a chain, went to fit it to my bike, but it's a bit short as I have a 49 tooth rear sprocket on it, it would fit standard.

Question: I have spare links. Can you have two rivit links on the chain? I am a little dubious over doing it. Spider senses are tingling and all that.

But how would it work with rivet links? They join 2 (internal) end bits of the chain, to fit another rivet link you would have to remove a link. No gain unless you mean you have a new length of chain?

Yup, I have a spare link off another chain and a spare rivet link both the right pitch and type etc, ready to fit, when I actually thought about what I was doing, I wondered about the strength and held off.

Is this for the R6 or the Gixxer?

Would the R6 get through scrutineering with two rivet links? Don't know if I would trust it on the Gixxer, or the R6 TBH.

It's for the R6, and it probably would pass, not had my chain thoroughly checked before. But, I would be thinking more of it breaking and missing out on the race....oh and my safety of course.

Had a search about on the web, and there's mixed reviews, I read on one forum, some chap had 4 links on one chain Shocked Shocked Just hoping that was a 125. Laughing

Currently leaning towards buying a new chain.

Why would 2 be any weaker than 1?

I was thinking this too, the chain is only as strong as it's strongest link, and a single rivet link is deemed strong enough to take the full load.

There is probably a slightly increased risk of breakage, in that there are now two rivet links that could let go. The risk of one rivet link letting go is very small though, so doubling a very small risk is still a very small risk.

A properly riveted link is just as strong as any other link. The question is whether you can do it properly, twice.

Yeah but those odds themselves are really small as a rivet link has to be able to take the stress without failure, if a single link was that unreliable in the first place then it would have no place on a motorcycle.

If the odds of failure are 0.001% and you double those odds to 0.002% the risk has doubled in relative terms, but the absolute risk is still very small.

Could you change a chain and sprockets safely twice? I have done so and not dieded yet.
