PostPosted: 12:55 - 27 Feb 2016    Post subject: Bandit won't start, need advice please Reply with quote

G'day all,
looking for a bit of advice please. All of a sudden my SK5 Bandit won't start. Battery is good (have also tried jump start from car), checked fuse at battery block and ignition fuse, all look OK.

All lights, indicators, hazards, heated grips work. When I press the ignition switch, the only thing that happens is that the lights dim. No sound, click or spark/turn over.

Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers, Jim

Hope not. No previous signs of Engine issue, ran fine 3 weeks ago. Serviced/MOT'd October (I know that's not a guarantee). less than 19k on the clock

If the lights dim when you are pressing the switch, I would say that power is getting to the starter motor, but for whatever reason it's not actually turning.

Did you short out the switch or the starter relay?

If you haven't tried shorting the starter relay and the battery is healthy, that is your next job. Peel back the rubber covers on the two poles and short them with a good size screwdriver. Expect lots of sparks and the engine to turn over nicely.

Then try the button again. Sometimes shorting out the relay persuades it to start playing ball. Otherwise replace the relay.

I wouldn't have thought that a fucked solenoid would result in dimmed lights. The dimmed lights indicate that the starter motor is drawing power.

Not tried, not confident/fit enough to run with it. Got a hill close by but be frigged trying to get it back up Confused

Somebody has suggested just giving the starter motor a light tap or two with a hammer to see if it's stuck. Will give that a go first

If it is the solenoid you'd usually get a clicking noise when you push the starter. Sounds like the starter motor has seized for some reason. If it were me I'd take a couple of mates and bump it down that hill. Sit on the bike, ignition on, second gear with the clutch in, get mates to push you until you have a bit of speed up then let the clutch out. If it doesn't start, get said mates to help you push the bike home again, then take the starter motor out...

Since 2003 most bikes turn the lights off when cranking.

Lights usually dim a bit when starting normally, but not like they are now, almost (but not quite) turning off. When I release the ignition switch they come back bright

Areyou really that stupid or are you just pretending.

A bit like you, obviously...

Remove the starter feed from the solenoid then press the start button. If the lights don't dim your starter needs a service.

sounds like the battery

you say it's ok but have no multimeter

you need to drop test it

my triple's battery was the same, showed good voltage but had no amps due to poor conditioning when new, tried to jump it and nothing

battery with good voltage can still have no amps, no cranking power

Try a +ve jump lead directly to the starter motor side of the starter relay, connect the negative to a good earth somewhere in the bike. If all spins, starter relay at fault.

Give the starter motor some percussive maintenance in case it is a stuck brush.

Remove starter motor, place in vice or otherwise hold securely. Attempt to operate with bike/car batteries and jump leads.

If starter motor spins outside of bike but not in bike, it's engine trouble.

If the starter motor wont spin outside bike, you have your culprit.
