 |
|
hi all,
im sure i have asked for this sort of advice before...but hey ho, i have forgotten any advice given, so i will start again.
i have a garage/shed, which has no electricity & is quite far from the house so i cant get power to it.
its been broken into a few times & nobody ever hears or sees anything due to its isolated location.
i have lost all sorts of irreplaceable old bike parts & other stuff (i should be on that reality show Hoarders)
so, im needing a security camera.
heres what im thinking : buy some sort of cheap camera off ebay & mount it on a metal pole above garage roof so it has a good view of anyone coming into the area of garage.
the power cable can go down inside the pole, so its harder to cut/waterproof.
cable will go inside garage & hook up to a car battery, which i can take round to the house every week or so to charge up.....
...............i dont know what sort of current 1 of these cameras will draw
also, as its too far from the house, i wont be able to use wifi....BUT what about 1 of those cameras that you can view on an android phone/tablet?
how easy would it be set up thise sort of thing? (please take into consideration i grew up in an era when computers were pretty much non existent & were only used by chess club members )
obviously it has to be as cheap as possible, have capability of viewing/recording on my tablet, preferably motion detected...... i could also rig up a battery operated motion detected light (seen these advertised for peanuts) & would obviously need to be 12v, as using car battery.
so, techies, advice please?
cheers,

A camera that you can view on a phone/tablet will use its own wifi or bluetooth to transmit the footage, which would limit the range to about 10 metres; even less if walls are involved.
Besides, there's not much good waking up the next morning to an empty shed and a grainy video of a hooded scrote with his arms full.
Simple security with minimal faff I think you'd be better off with one of these
Then lie about 30 rakes on the floor surrounding the shed. ____________________ Yamaha FZ6 S2 |

hi,
thanks for all the replies.
ok....more details :
******advance warning of wall of text reqd*****
I live on a main road, in the middle of a row of terraced houses.
so the garage is actually in an other street. (sorry, cant do do a paint diagram...maybe I could show it on google maps or something.. ).
but, its actually, technically, not that far away, as the crow flies, but to get to it, I need to walk out front door, walk past the last couple of houses on the row, turn round the corner into a culd-de-sac then pass another dozen or so houses & access the pitch via a wee path between the houses.
the garage itself is isolated.
the plot of land has a large wire fence at the rear, the railway line at 1 side & wooden garden fences at the other side.
so its in a "dead end" with only 1 way in, same way out.
theres about 4 or 5 garages on the same plot of land, but mine is the furthest away.
it backs into a fence of someone else's back garden.
but standing a the rear of the garage, I can see my house, as straight across the half a dozen back gardens, about 700m away is my back door.
does that make any sense?
anyway, its a old wooden garage. I have deliberately left the weeds, nettles & thistles overgrow, so it looks like its not used often & its just another anonymous garage.
but some opportunist smashed the hasp off & stole a load of bike parts (engines, brakes, exhausts etc) which to the untrained eye, looked like junk...but it was brembo calipers, couple of vfr engines, 125-250cc 2 stroke engines, full front ends, s/s exhausts etc....
all in v.good useable & saleable condition & all stuff that would cost a fortune to replace (IF i could find replacements)
its been broken into a couple of times & the 1st time looked like nothing was taken & I fitted a nice new, shiny hasp & padlock (probably a bad idea as it then stood out & looked like I had something valuable to protect)
I reckon the same ppl came back, just smashed the hasp, bypassing the padlock & security bolts & made off with the goods.
anyway : trip wires & booby traps aside, there must be something I can do?
I suppose I could insure it, but thats not the point.
I like the fact I have/had access to my own spares place.
if I needed a set of forks or carbs or whatever, I could walk round & rummage through ma stuff & always find something useable (I have been hoarding stuff for over 30yrs).
I didnt realise a camera needed to be within wi-fi range... (technology isnt my strong point) I presumed it could beam back images via the internet, to my lap top or tablet
& record when activated via motion sensors/pir's alongside those lights that come on when someone approaches & be powered by a 12v car battery.
it would have helped the polis trace them as they would have needed a vehicle, & maybe 2 people to break in & carry stuff out.
it would have good to see a face or 2 & maybe a number plate (its a small town, im well known & I can find most local junkie thieves myself )
ok....time to re-think things....
cheers,

CCTV is fairly tricky to do cheaply without a reasonable knowledge of computers. The wifi is only part of the problem, you also need to manage the video data (theres a lot) and configure the equipment so it doesn't use insane amounts of storage.
Your real problem is that the door and structure are crap. Get some cheap wood and toughen it all up.
| bladerunner wrote: | WiFi range is kinda dependent on what your using. Your home router will pump out 25mw but you can buy 600mw video transmitters that work on 12v for about £40-£50 which with a directional antenna (about 10cm long) will get you video links over 4 miles. Main problem is 5.8ghz offers bugger all ability to penetrate buildings. Good so you don't interfere with peoples home WiFi but you'd need pretty much line of sight with a receiver antenna outside your house or at least inside a window. These only really offer 480p level quality as well so yes you can buy a DVR for £20 that's motion detect and record at home its not great footage. |
Range figures for these these tend to collapse when used in urban areas. There's so much RF traffic and so many buildings in the way. 600mw is barely anything. Even 1w is pretty mediocre unless it's between two hilltops. |

hi all,
been thinking about this again...
right, the garage is pretty much in a straight line, about 150 feet (apologies for earlier error in distance) from the bottom of my garden, across some neighbours' gardens.
at the bottom of my garden, I have a "summer-house" (actually just a fancy shed) & I have a power-point in there, running to a fused spur point in my kitchen.. see where im going?
can I plug in, 1 of those wi-fi extender thingies in the shed, (or even put it on the roof, so its in direct line of sight with no obstacles like fencies etc)
I could move the broadband modem to a back window so everything is in line of sight.
then use a cheap wi-fi camera, that runs off a 12v dc adaptor (which I can substitute for a fully charged car battery, charging it up in the house every week or so)
so the camera is beaming stuff to my fone or whatever & recording only when activated.
& I could also fit those intruder lights (which could be solar powered/battery powered)
would that work? or am I just over simplifying things? (ie being an idiot )
cheers,

Now, I have no direct experience of this, but what about something like:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B016Y1OTE6
Its a wildlife camera.
You put a p+g simcard in it, then it sits in standby mode until it detects movement, can then alert you via text message or email, and then starts recording.
Battery apparently lasts 6 months in standby, and is a self contained unit that looks to do everything you want. |

hi,
good thinking.
I had looked at that sort of thing 1st but dismissed because any would-be thief could just steal the camera along with its recordings.
but I guess I could put it high up, out of reach & camouflage it as much as possible.
I will look into this!
cheers,
